Read Across America Book Drive Begins Today at LCJSMS

Plus: girls basketball takes on A. L. Johnson in first round of NJSIAA state sectional tournament.

Here are five things you need to now today, Feb. 28, 2011:

  1. The Planning Board is scheduled to meet tonight at 8 p.m. at city hall.
  2. Books and Woofs: The Seeing Eye puppies-in-training will be at the Summit Public Library at 7 p.m. Children in 5th grade and older can sign-up to read to the puppies and their handlers.  Registration is required and all are welcome.
  3. The girls basketball team enters the NJSIAA state sectional tournament tonight at 7 p.m. at A. L. Johnson High School in Clark. Go Hilltoppers!
  4. As a part of Spirit Week at Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School, (February 28 to March 4), the school will hold its second annual school-wide book drive in support of the NEA's Read Across America, which will be celebrated across the nation on March 2. All of the books collected during the drive will be donated to a K-5 elementary school in Jersey City, but donations of books for middle school aged students are also welcome. Donations of new or used books will be accepted, and they may be dropped off in the collection boxes that are in the concourse of the school.  
  5. The Summit Police Department is in need of more school crossing guards. Most guards work two shifts per day from 7:45 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to 3:45 p.m., school days, Monday through Friday.School crossing guards are paid $40.33 per day. An incentive bonus of three full days pay is given to those with a perfect attendance record for the school year. Should the schools declare a snow day, crossing guards will be paid for these days, provided they work the day before and the day after the snow day.The Summit Police Department provides uniforms and training. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and provide their own transportation to the crossing posts. Anyone interested may pick up an application at the Summit Police Department located at 512 Springfield Av. Any questions should be directed to Sgt. David Richel, 908-277-9397.
