On Armed Forces Day Enjoy Summit's All-American Fish Fry

The annual event is co-sponsored by American Legion Lindsay Street Post 322

"Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 20, 1950, marks the first combined demonstration by America's defense team of its progress, under the National Security Act, towards the goal of readiness for any eventuality. It is the first parade of preparedness by the unified forces of our land, sea, and air defense".

Although Picatinny Arsenal, some 30 miles away, had to cancel their emblematic Armed Forces Day Parade, there's plenty to do in Summit to mark this historic celebration of our military prowess.

Namely, eat some fish and help support the Lyons VA Hospital. Summit's American Legion Lindsay Street Post 322, , and the Masons Hill City Lodge 18 are sponsoring the annual fish fry today at Lyric Park (Bank Street and Beechwood Road).

"The two parking garages at Broad Street and Springfield Avenue will be open and available for free," according to summitdowntown.org. The event runs 11a.m. to 5p.m. Fill up on a $10 meal of not just fish, but cajun fries, coleslaw, and homemade baked beans.

Following the fish fry, swing by the Hat Tavern for a special show by musician Cliff Doenges at 6p.m.  If you have a military ID, you get a 10 percent discount for the night.

In a proclamation issued yesterday by the White House, President Barack Obama reminded all Americans about the importance of this day.

"I urge citizens to learn more about military service by attending and participating in the local observances of the day. I also encourage Americans to volunteer at organizations that provide support to our troops."

And eat some fish, too.
