Summit Year in Review: Sports Highlights of 2012

This is a look at the highlights of Summit sports for 2012.



February 19, 2012 – AJ Iarussi Wins 195 lb District Championship

AJ Iarussi took first place in the 195 lb weight class of the NJSIAA District 10 tournament in February. He defeated Madison wrestler Nick Haboj, 3-1. Iarussi was one of three Summit wrestlers who placed at the top for the district.

March 5, 2012 – Hilltoppers Swim Team Close Season in Style at Meet of Champions

The Summit High School Swim Team set four school records at the 2012 Meet of Champions. In the 200 medley relay Loring Bowen, Ryan Sebastian, Cameron Simko and Will Beckett swam a season best 1:37.12 to lower their school record from the Union County Championships. The 200 medley relay team finished third in the state, the 200 free relay (Will Beckett, Luca, Kevin Fries and Ryan) earned fifth place and the 400 free relay (Cameron, Will Benn, Tim and Loring) came in sixth.

March 20, 2012 – Summit Earns First Ever NJSIAA Hockey Crown

Hilltoppers earn a state championship title with a 2-1 OT win over Tenafly in the Public B finals. It was the first ever NJSIAA win for Summit.

April 20, 2012 – Summit Athlete Wins Gold!

Marissa Jennings, a junior at Summit High School, finished in 1st place and won the Gold Medal at the 2012 New Jersey Rowing Championships in Teaneck New Jersey over the weekend.

May 20, 2012 – Summit High School Sailing Team Participates in NJ State Championships

The Summit Sailing Team won the NJ State Championships in Toms River, May 19. Twelve teams competed from across New Jersey.  The race committee ran 14 races, 7 each for the A fleet and the B fleet. 

June 17, 2012 – Summit Lacrosse Group 1 State Title Win (VIDEO)

View a video of the Summit Boys Lacrosse team finish their season with a 20-1 record on Lax.com. The team took their 4th consecutive State Championship win.

October 24, 2012 – Summit Girl Scores Big At Roller Skating Nationals

Madison-Jade Bishop, an 8-year-old from Franklin Elementary school took home a silver medal in the primary girls category at the roller skating nationals in the summer.  Bishop is a member of the All American Rollermagic skating team. She came in 5th place out of 35 to close out her competition in the final round.

November 19, 2012 – Recap of Summit Gymnastics Inaugural Season

A look back at the first season of the Summit Gymnastics team.  The team placed fourth in the county for the first time in Summit High School history.

November 21, 2012 – Summit High School Sailors Make it to Big Easy

The Summit Sailors finished 12th overall in the silver fleet at the Great Oaks High School Regatta. Four Juniors from the Summit High School Sailing Team traveled to New Orleans on November 9th to compete in the competition which featured teams from 40 high schools.


November 26, 2012 – 30 Alumni Keep Summit’s Thanksgiving-Time Tradition Going

On Nov. 23, 30 Summit High School Alumni kept the annual thanksgiving tradition alive by holding the 11th annual Summit Turkey Bowl.  The game consisted of four teams of eight to nine players taking part in 20-minute halves.

November 28, 2012 – Marissa Jennings Signs D1 Offer With Southern Methodist University

Marissa Jennings, a senior at Summit High School, signed a Division 1 Letter of Intent to row for BigEast bound Southern Methodist University in Dallas starting next Fall.

December 9, 2012 –

The Summit Hilltoppers beat Palisades Park in the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 2, Group 3 Championship Game at MetLife Stadium in Novemeber. This was the seventh state playoff title for the Hilltoppers. They defeated Palisades Park 30-0.
