Voter Turnout Steady In Ward 2

Franklin School voters cast their ballots in modular units this Election Day.

Summit residents in Ward II had no trouble adjusting to the change in venue casting their ballots at Franklin School Tuesday morning.

This election day rather than voting in Franklin's gym, residents voted inside modular units on the school's grounds.

Poll worker William Rapp said turnout had been "very steady" Tuesday morning. Serving as a greeter, Rapp guided voters to the proper booth and said this seemed to eliminate any potential confusion.

Calling the modular units "cozy," Rapp said they were "working out well" and a good alternative as voting in the gym was "disruptive" to both students and school staff.

Rapp said while all of the district's schools were looking at alternate places to hold elections, Franklin was the only one that made the change in time for this election.

During a recent presentation on safety and security, Summit Schools Superintendent Dr. Nathan Parker was asked by a parent about the possibility of closing schools on Election Day or moving voting out of schools. Parker said while the district, city officials and the Union County Board of Elections were working together on it, alternative polling places needed to be located before that change could be implemented.
