Latina organization seeks to expand/Organización Latina prepara expansión para ayudar a mujeres con cáncer de la mama

In just three years a budding organization that helps medically underserved Latinas in Summit deal with breast cancer is seeing the need to expand and seek added funding due to the increase in the number of women asking for help.

Dora Arias, founder of the non-profit organization Curemonos, Inc. (which means Healing Ourselves in Spanish) and a few volunteers are dealing with the demand for help. But Arias said, “We are at full capacity. The need is so great, I work long hours, but I cannot ask volunteers who work twenty hours a week, to do more without pay. I need more funding.”

“Women are calling us from Newark and from other locations, without insurance, without medical assistance, without a doctor to help them know what the lump in their breast means, and without access to mammograms and counseling for support.”

Curemonos helps Latinas navigate through the process from their first diagnosis to additional testing, surgery, post and pre surgery counseling, psychological assistance and emotional support. Arias does everything from driving the women to doctor appointments to advocating for them with hospitals to provide free mammograms, chemotherapy and the medicines they need. Today with the help of volunteers, women are able to talk to a support group and get information in Spanish from volunteer translators.

Arias’s plan for the next three years is to attract the big donors and the foundations with more resources to expand and provide the services Latinas need in their own neighborhoods. She said she has asked Senator Robert Menendez to assist her in her quest to identify additional organizations in all counties of New Jersey.  

At a reception celebrating the third-year anniversary of Curemonos, Arias thanked Senator Menendez for his assistance in introducing legislation to help women with cancer, as well as trusted donors and the many dedicated doctors and personnel from Overlook Hospital who deal with the women from diagnosis to surgery.  

Dr. Stuart Green, Associate Director of Overlook Family Medicine and Behavioral Scientist, president of Curemonos Board of Directors since its inception in 2009,  whose own innovative program, PATHWAYS, is helping doctors pinpoint cancer treatments and learn from their patients, said, “this organization is poised to explode and grow because of the need. The need is tremendous and Union County is the fastest growing area for Hispanics,” he said. “Overlook Hospital does its part in terms of charitable care but there isn’t enough of that to deal 100 per cent with the specialized care that is needed.”

Smiling and enjoying the evening was Leidy Chaves whose diagnosis last year was unbearable. “I was crying and crying, I could not deal with the loss of my hair," she said. "I found my hair on my pillow, in the blankets. Lumps of hair everywhere and I cried.  I cried for a month. The diagnosis was not as bad as loosing my hair. But when I saw that I was affecting my children, I decided to seek help. Thank God for Dora (Arias) who held my hand.” She added, “Curemonos is a very friendly group, like a family, which gave me great support. Like having great friends.  And Dora (Arias), always super special and always attentive to us letting us know where to go and where to get help. She is like a mother to us.”

Jasmin Torres, Breast Center Navigator at Overlook Hospital, said as point person for the women who come to the center, she is thankful that Curemonos and Dora (Arias) are an extension of their center. “Dora has the contacts in the community and she is the support outside of the hospital that the women need.”

Torres said the Center works closely with Curemonos to refer patients vise versa.

Arias ultimate goal is to help at least 500 women a year and to attract donors above the $60,000 mark. For now she continues with her proposals for the future of her organization.

En sólo tres años la recién establecida organización que ayuda a Latinas con necesidades médicas a tratar con el cáncer del seno  en la Ciudad de Summit ve la necesidad de ampliar sus servicios y atraer financiación adicional para servir a mas mujeres debido al aumento del número de mujeres que están pidiendo ayuda.

Dora Arias, fundadora de la organización sin fines de lucro, Curémonos, Inc. y voluntarias tratan con la demanda de ayuda. Pero la Sra. Arias dijo, “Estamos al tope de las mujeres que podemos ayudar. La necesidad es tan grande que trabajo largas horas, pero no puedo pedirle a las voluntarias que ya trabajan veinte horas a la semana, hacer más sin paga. Necesito más donaciones.”

“Las mujeres nos están llamando desde la Ciudad de Newark y de otras localidades fuera de Summit, sin el seguro, sin asistencia médica, sin un doctor que les explique que quiere decir el tumor en sus pecho, y sin el acceso a mamogramas o apoyo.”

La organización Curémonos ayuda a Latinas a navegar el proceso de tratamiento desde su primer diagnóstico, hasta las pruebas adicionales, cirugía, conserjería antes y después de la cirugía, ayuda psicológica y apoyo emocional. La Sra. Arias hace de  todo hasta llevar a las mujeres a sus citas con el doctor y a abogar por ellas con los hospitales para proporcionarles mamogramas gratis, quimioterapia y las medicinas que ellas necesitan. Hoy con la ayuda de voluntarias, las mujeres pueden dirigirse a un grupo de apoyo y conseguir la información en español con  traductores voluntarios.

El plan de la Sra. Arias para los próximos tres años es atraer a donantes grandes con mayores posibilidades y a fundaciones de mayor alcance para poder ampliar sus servicios y proporcionarle ayuda a las Latinas necesitadas para que puedan recibir los servicios en sus propias vecindades. Según ella ha pedido al Senador Robert Menéndez asistirle en su búsqueda para identificar a organizaciones adicionales en todos los condados de Nueva Jersey. 

En una recepción donde se celebro el tercer año de aniversario de Curémonos, la Sra. Arias agradeció al Senador Menéndez por su ayuda y por la introducción de  legislación de apoyo a las mujeres con cáncer, así como agradeció a sus donantes de confianza y a los dedicados doctores y al personal de Overlook Hospital quiénes tratan con las mujeres desde su diagnóstico hasta la cirugía.

El Doctor Stuart Green, Director Asociado de Medicina Familiar en Overlook Hospital y Científico del Comportamiento humano, presidente de la Junta directiva de Curémonos desde su inicio en 2009, cuyo propio programa innovador, PATHWAYS ayuda a doctores a señalar tratamientos de cáncer y a aprender de sus pacientes, dijo, “esta organización esta al punto de explotar en su crecimiento debido a la necesidad. La necesidad es alta y el Condado de Unión es el área de mayor y más rápido crecimiento de Hispanos,” dijo él. “El Hospital Overlook hace su parte en términos de cuidado caritativo, pero no hay suficientes fondos para tratar con el 100 por ciento del cuidado especializado que se necesita.”

Sonriente estuvo durante la recepción Leidy Chaves cuyo diagnóstico de cáncer el año pasado fue insoportable. “Yo lloraba, y lloraba, no podía tratar con la pérdida de mi cabello,' dijo. 'Encontraba mi pelo en mi almohada, en las mantas, los montones de pelo por todas partes y lloraba. Llore durante un mes. El diagnóstico no era lo que mas me asustaba era la perdida de mi pelo. Pero cuando vi que yo estaba afectando a mis niños, decidí buscar ayuda. Gracias a Dios conocí a Dora (Arias) quién me llevo de la mano.” Chaves añadió, “Curémonos es un grupo muy amistoso, como una familia, que me dio gran apoyo. Es como tener mejores amigas. Y Dora (Arias), siempre tan especial, siempre súper y siempre atenta a nosotros avisándonos a donde ir y en donde conseguir ayuda. Ella parece como una madre para nosotras.”

Jasmin Torres, del Centro de Mama del Hospital Overlook, dijo que como la persona de primer contacto para las mujeres que vienen al centro a chequearse, ella esta agradecida que Curémonos y Dora (Arias) son una extensión del centro. “Dora tiene los contactos en la comunidad y ella es el apoyo fuera del hospital que las mujeres necesitan.”

Torres dijo que ella trabaja de cerca con Curémonos para identificar a mujeres que necesitan ayuda y Curémonos también hacen lo mismo y viceversa.

La Sra. Arias tiene como meta ayudar al menos a 500 mujeres al año y atraer a donantes que puedan proporcionarle donaciones de mas de $60,000 dólares.  Por ahora continuara su trabajo con muchas propuestas para el futuro de su organización.
