Latino Parents Night at Summit High School

Para Arturo López el reunirse con los padres de la escuela superior Summit High School en una noche cuando podría estar en su casa descansando no es un problema.

Esta es su pasión, ayudar a los estudiantes y a sus hijos ha navegar el proceso para seleccionar cursos, los requisitos de graduación, y el curriculo de estudios que permitará a los estudiantes cumplir con sus deseos o ideas que los llevarán hacia una educación universitaria.

La reunión de esta noche fue para informar a los padres sobre la selección de cursos que se apróxima y los examenes de medio año que comenzarán el 27 de enero.

Los padres participarón en un ejercicio que los pemitieron sentir lo que sus hijos sentiran cuando tengan que seleccionar sus cursos para el año entrante. Cursos de Matemácas, pero que nivel de matemáticas, de nivel universitario, de nivel avanzado, Algebra, o Trigonometría? Y cuales seran los cursos optativos? Fue un ejercicio que para el Sr. Lopez, oriundo de Oruence, Galicia, España, que llego a Estados Unidos en el 1971, es importante para poder incluir a los padres. El cree que la educación es la única vía hacia un futuro mejor.

“Creo que la educación es lo único que nos brinda mobilidad social. Olvidaté de ganarse la lotería o de vender una propiedad, la educación es la única vía,” dijo. “Y sí no ayudámos a las nuevas generaciones. Quien lo hara? Jamas sabran.” Su experiencia personal es parecida a la de los estudiantes que ayuda. “Llegamos a este país en busca de mejores oportunidades, no sólo económicas sino educacionales. Yo ya estaba en la Universidad durante la era de Franco, pero sin muchas expectativas, entonces my padre pensó que los Estados Unidos nos brindaría un futuro mejor.”

López interrumpe lo que esta diciendo para saludar a una madre, Jenny Macias cuyo hijo Esteban está en el octavo grado y entrará a Summit High School en Septiembre, y la dirige a la biblioteca donde se llevará a cabo la reunión de esta noche. Entonces comienza la reunión, “Bienvenidos todos y gracias por estar aquí. Esto demuestra que ustedes toman en serio la escuela y la educación de sus hijos. Pero no soy el unico que trabajo aqui, tenemos administradores que estan haciendo todo para que sus hijos obtengan la mejor educación posible.

El Sr. López presenta al Sr. Akey, Vice Rector de la escuela, Vanessa Rueda, Consejera Bilingue, y a Leslie Zimring, Supervisora de Lenguages y de ESL. Ellos estan presentes para apoyar al Sr. López en su iniciativa por informar a los padres de los exámenes de medio año y del proceso de registración. Iraidis López, no relacionada al Sr. López, que estaba aqui para escuchar y hacer preguntas, dijo, “El Sr. López es nuestra conexión con la escuela.

El es incondicional. El no pone límites sobre la ayuda que brinda a los estudiantes y a los padres. El es exigente con nuestros hijos, no se que haríamos sin él.” El Sr. Bustillos, otro padre, dijo que sentía que Summit High School será un reto para su hijo pero que se siente contento de ver que el Sr. López estará allí para ayudar a su hijo. “La escuela de Summit es una gran institución con excellentes administradores,” dijo. La Sra. Zimring, colega del Sr. López dijo, “El está aquí a las 7:00 a.m. ayudando a los estudiantes con trabajo extra y está aquí al final de clases para ayudar a los que lo necesitan. El es indispensable. Me siento afortunada de trabajar con él.”

For Arturo Lopez hosting Summit High School Latino parents on an evening when he could be home relaxing is not a problem.  This is his passion-- helping the students and their parents maneuver through the maize of school courses, requirements for graduation, and a course of study that will allow the students to fulfill their goals and ideas that will allow them to embark on a college education.

Tonight's meeting was to inform the parents about the upcoming course selection and mid-term exams. 

The parents participated on a hands-on exercise to allow them to experience what their children will go through as they select their course for the coming year.  Courses in Math, but college prep math, or Advance Placement Math, Algebra or Trigonometry? And what about electives?

It was an exercise that for Mr. Lopez, who arrived in the United States from Oruence,  Galicia, Spain in 1971, is important to have the parents on board.  He believes that education is the only way to a better future. “I believe education is the only way to upward mobility.  Forget about winning the lottery or selling real estate, education is the only way,” he said.  “And if we don’t help the new generation, who will? They will never know.”

His experience is much like the kids he serves. “We came to this country in search of better opportunities, not just economic but educational.  I was already a college student during the Franco Era, but without many prospects, and so my father thought the United States would provide us a better future.

Lopez interrupts his story to welcome one of the parents, Jenny Macias whose son Esteban is in the eight grade and will be coming to Summit High School in September, he directs her to the meeting tonight in the library. 

And so the evening starts, “Welcome everyone and thank you for being here.  This shows that you are serious about school and about your children’s education. But I don’t work alone, we have a staff here that works hard to make sure your children get the best education possible.” Mr. Lopez goes on to introduce Mr. Akey, Vice Principal of the school, Vanessa Rueda, Bilingual Counselor, and Leslie Zimring, Supervisor of World Languages and ESL. They are there to support Mr. Lopez in his effort to inform the parents about the upcoming mid-terms and registration process.

Iraidis Lopez, no relation to Mr. Lopez, who was here to listen and ask questions, said, “Mr. Lopez is our link to the school.  He is unconditional.  He places no limits on the kind of help he offers the students and the parents.  He sets high standards for our kids . I don’t know what we would do without him.”

Mr. Bustillos, another parent, said he feels Summit High School will be a challenge for his son but he is happy to see Mr. Lopez will be there to help him. "Summit High School is a great institution with great administrators," he said. 

Ms. Zimring, Lopez’s colleague said, “He is here at 7:00 a.m. helping students with extra work and he is here after school to help all those who need him.  He is indispensable, I feel lucky to work with him.”
