Professionals Share Success With Hispanic High School Students / Profesionales comparten con los estudiantes Latinos de Summit High School

Students at have walked its hallways since the 1800s in search of an education. Their young minds dreaming of future careers, college and successful lives.

The school with over 1,500 students is ranked 25th among the 322 high schools in New Jersey, and every year its doors welcome more and more students from other parts of the world such as Asia, Central and South America. This proud institution has produced Olympic athletes, outstanding doctors, scientists, NFL Players, and professionals from all walks of life. 

Today a group of Latino professionals look to inspire, motivate and encourage Latino students at Summit High School, who make up 16 per cent of the student body, to also soar and make their dreams come true.  HISPA’s motto (Hispanics Inspiring Students Achievement & Performance) is “ just like you, I sat there, and now here I am.”

It’s a way to personalize the students experience in school and to let them see and hear from the professionals they can become.

Habi Coulibaly, a Verizon Human Resources professional who grew up in Africa, France and Austria and speaks Spanish and is a polyglot speaking eight languages, challenged the students to study hard and to take on challenges every day. She asked them all to enroll in French classes to compliment their studies.

Coulibaly said second languages and extra curricular activities are extremely important in the real world—at her desk when making a selection as to the best employee to hire, this is a considerations that often makes a candidate stand out.  “A resume without a second language is boring," she said. "I have given the students a challenge to enroll in French classes. I am coming back next year to see how many have."

Carlos Arias a financial advisor, who owns his own franchise from Ameriprise, said he always liked numbers and though he played sports and was a Taekwondo champion he knew he wanted to own his own business and become an entrepreneur.  He also revealed that as a youngster he sat, just where the students were sitting today, with a slight accent in his speech because his parents did not speak English-- and look at him now. 

Summit High School sponsors six of these presentations throughout the school year to keep the students inspired and to offer them as many opportunities as possible to learn and to continue on to higher education, according to Arturo Lopez, Bilingual Coordinator.

“Summit Schools District sponsors these presentations in partnership with HISPA because we believe its important to the students to hear from professionals from their own background and to see positive role models, so they can too go to college.”

Principal Paul Sears said the students need to appreciate the opportunities they are granted and their job is to make them work for them.

For Sebastian Recio, a Junior, the speakers were excellent because they were able to explain to some students, who don’t know yet what they want, the road to take.  “I know what I want. I want to go into The Marines, and I am going to go to Rutgers University and graduate with a degree in law-enforcement.”

Maria Sanchez, a freshman, said, “the speakers were really interesting and inspiring. I feel that just like them, I can do the same. I want to become a business woman.”

HISPA will compile the student’s evaluation of today's presentation as part of a study it is realizing in conjunction with Princeton University. The aim of the study is to quantify whether role model presentations- in fact motivate and inspire the students. 

Some of the questions the students responded to in the evaluation were: How much did you learn about possible careers? Is the HISPA Role Model’s career something you might want to do?

Los estudiantes de Summit High School han caminado sus pasillos desde los 1800s en busca de una educación.  Con sus tiernos deseaos que sueñan  con sus futuras carreras, la universidad, y el éxito.La escuela con mas de 1,500 alumnos esta clasificada como No. 25th entre 322 escuelas de estudios superiores en Nueva Jersey, y todos los años sus puertas se abren para dar la bienvenida a estudiantes de otras partes del mundo como el Asia, y Centro y Sud America.

Esta distinguida institución ha educado a atletas olímpicos, a doctores sobresalientes, a científicos, a deportistas de la Liga Nacional de Futbol y a profesionales de todas categorías.Hoy profesionales de un grupo Latino que se ha propuesto a inspirar, motivar y a encaminar a los estudiantes Latinos estuvieron en Summit High School para motivar a los Latinos, que forman el 16 por ciento del estudiantado, para que ellos también puedan surgir a lo mas alto y para que sus sueños se hagan realidad.  

El lema de HISPA (Hispanos Inspirando el Éxito y Desarollo en los Estudiantes Latinos/Hispanics Inspiring Students Achievement & Performance) es “ tal como tu, yo estaba sentado allá, y ahora mira donde estoy.”Es una manera de acercar mas a los estudiantes para que ellos vean y escuchen a los profesionales a los que ellos podrían convertirse en el futuro.Habi Coulibaly, administradora de recursos humanos para la Verizon creció en África, Francia y Austria, habla el Español y es poliglota, hablando ocho idiomas. Ella urgió a los estudiantes a estudiar fuerte y ha trazarse metas todos los días. Ella les pidió que todos tomen clases de Frances como complemento a sus otros estudios.Coulibaly dijo que el estudiar un segundo idioma y participar en actividades de deportes son de suma importancia en la vida real—en su escritorio cuando ella esta seleccionando al mejor empleado para contratar esto es lo que destaca a un empleado. “Un currículo vitae sin un lenguaje adicional es aburrido,” dijo ella. “Hice un trato con los estudiantes para que todos se enrolen en clases de Frances.  Y voy a volver el año entrante para ver cuantos lo hicieron.”Carlos Arias, un consejero de finanzas, dueño de su propia franquicia de Ameriprise, dijo que a el siempre le gustaron los números y aunque participo en deportes en la escuela y fue campeón de Taekwondo, el sabia que quería ser un hombre de negocios y tener su propia empresa.  

También revelo que de niño, el también se sentó tal como estaban los estudiantes, hablando el Ingles con acento, porque sus padres no hablaban Ingles, y mírenlo a el hoy.La escuela superior de Summit auspicia un total de seis foros con HISPA para ayudar a los estudiantes a desarrollar el interés por sus estudios y para ofrecerles numerosas oportunidades para que aprendan y se encaminen hacia la universidad, según dijo Arturo López, Coordinador Bilingüe.“El Distrito Escolar de Summit ofrece estos foros a sus estudiantes en conexión con HISPA porque creemos que es importante que los estudiantes escuchen a profesionales de su propia cultura y para que vean a personajes positivos para que vayan a la universidad,” dijo.

El Rector de la Escuela, Paul Sears, dijo a los estudiantes que ellos necesitan apreciar estas oportunidades que se les están ofreciendo y deben saber utilizarlas a su favor.Para Sebastian Recio, en tercer año de preparación, dijo que los presentadores estuvieron excelentes porque pudieron ofrecer información a algunos estudiantes que no sabían lo que querian hacer.” Añadió, “Pero yo se lo que quiero hacer. Yo quiero ser Marino y también quiero ir a la Universidad de Rutgers para estudiar una carrera en orden publico.”María Sánchez, de noveno grado, dijo, “Los presentadores estuvieron excelentes.

Muy interesantes e inspiradores.  Creo que tal como ellos, yo puedo hacer lo mismo. Yo quiero ser una mujer de negocios.”HISPA va a recopilar las evaluaciones que completaron los estudiantes hoy para un estudio que están realizando junto con la Universidad de Princeton para confirmar si tiene o no valor estas presentaciones en el motivar e inspirar a los estudiantes.Algunas preguntas que contestaron los estudiantes fueron: Que tanto aprendió Ud. sobre posibles carreras?
