Summit Halloween Guide: Parade Set for Saturday

A parade, concert and downtown trick-or-treating are coming up, so get your costumes ready.

Halloween celebrations in Summit will be handled slightly differently this year, offering little ghosts and goblins an opportunity to show off their costumes on two separate occasions downtown.

First, the Annual Summit PAL Halloween Parade will take place Saturday at the Bouras Parking Lot, located at 25 DeForest Ave. Parade assembly will take place starting at 3 p.m. Participants are invited to model their award-winning costumes while mingling with some special guests from the Department of Community Programs.

The Parade begins marching down Beechwood Road at 3:30 p.m. and ends at the Village Green. Refreshments will be served on the Green during the Prize Ceremony, which honors costume winners in various categories including Cutest, Scariest, Best Sports Figure, and more.

The Summit PAL Halloween Parade is sponsored by the Summit Police Athletic League (PAL) in cooperation with Summit Community Programs. For more information regarding the Parade, please contact Summit Community Programs at 908-277-2932. This event will take place rain or shine.

Following the parade, the community is invited to a free spooktacular Halloween concert hosted by Central Presbyterian Church. The concert begins at 5:15 p.m. Attendees will learn about the origins of Halloween and the classic tunes that accompany the holiday as organ music rattles the Sanctuary's rafters.

Refreshments will be served at this event and goodie bags will be distributed to trick-or-treaters.

Downtown merchants will be offering treats to children from 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Halloween, Thursday, Oct. 31. Trick-or-treaters should look for a poster in the window of each storefront to see who is participating.

This event is sponsored by Summit Downtown, Inc., a non-profit corporation, which represents all retailers and businesses in the Special Improvement District and a proud sponsor of retail and community events in downtown Summit.

SDI Executive Director Marin Mixon explained that at the request of business owners, who often have their busiest sales day on Saturday, trick-or-treating will be held on Halloween itself this year.

Mixon said she is open to feedback following the event to see if the change was amenable.

Here's hoping Mother Nature isn't a witch again this Halloween and all events go off without a hitch.
