JLS Hosts Successful Community Leadership Forum

More than thirty local non-profit organizations took part in a Community Leadership Forum hosted by the Junior League of Summit (JLS) this past week.

The forum, held at Temple Sinai in Summit, was a training and networking opportunity that gave organizations insight into some of the tougher issues they're facing these days. Among the prevalent topics/concerns: a lack of funding, addressing low-income families in an affluent community, meeting a diverse set of needs, and effectively utilizing volunteers. The group also discussed staying true to mission and knowing when it's time to change strategies. National Speaker, Karen Henning, Principal and Founder of CareerScape Consulting, led the session.

All types of non-profits were represented at this forum and from many local towns: big and small, new and old. Among them: the First Aid Squad, Girls on the Run, The Connection, local churches, Overlook Hospital, Downtown Summit, Inc, SAGE Eldercare, Family Promise and the Summit School District.

The JLS also did a needs assessment survey to use as a reference for future League projects.

Enthusiasm for the event was high and plans are already underway for a early 2014 forum.

The JLS is a nonprofit, charitable, and educational organization of women who are committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.
