William R. Schwenck, Longtime Summit Middle School Teacher, Dies at 75

Schwenck founded the Stokes outdoor experience program at Lawton C. Johnson middle school in Summit.

Former Lawton C. Johnson Middle School teacher William R. Schwenck, 75, of Chatham Township passed away Friday, Sept. 27.

Schwenck was born in Jersey City, raised in New Providence, and graduated from Summit High School. He taught at Johnson for 32 years and shared his love of the outdoors with students by founding the 'STOKES' program, an educational camping experience that brings middle schoolers together.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Chatham Emergency Squad, 45 Spring St., Chatham, N.J. 07928.
