Explosion closes portion of Springfield Avenue

An electrical explosion in a street manhole closed road for 90 minutes on Wednesday.

Springfield Avenue between Summit Avenue and Irving Place was closed for 90 minutes on Wednesday afternoon after an electrical explosion in a street manhole occurred around 3 p.m., according to Deputy Fire Chief Richard Degroot.

The explosion caused a power surge in the downtown area, but power was restored quickly, Degroot said. Police and fire units responded and closed off a portion of Springfield Avenue and Irving Place until a crew from JCP&L arrived. No injuries or damage to private or public property were reported.
