Last Chance: Summit Police Host Open House

The second annual open house is set for Sunday from to 4 p.m

Residents will have a chance to tour police headquarters, talk to the officers keeping the streets safe, and find out just what police work entails when the Summit Police Department opens its doors for its second-annual open house Sunday.

The open house is set from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at police headquarters at 512 Springfield Ave. The initiative of Chief Robert Weck, the open house is meant to better connect the community with its police department.

Officer Ryan Stanek, who works in department's community policing unit, said visitors will be able to tour different stations, including the court room, the armory, the report room, the chief's office, and a favorite of children, the jail cell.

Visitors will learn about how many calls the police handle each year, just what kind of paperwork is involved in policing, and they'll be able to get to know the department's officers.

"The message is come in and meet members of the police department and get to know us as people, and not just as police officers," Stanek said. "We want (the public) to know that we're here for them. That when we show up somewhere it's not only for problems, but to be involved in the community."
