Oak Knoll First Graders Visit Summit Police and Fire Departments

A look inside the world of those who help the community.

Students in first grade took a special field trip on November 10 to the Summit Police and Fire Departments to see what these first responders really do.

The theme of the unit the first grade is currently studying in Language Arts and Reading is “Communities,” in which the students talk about family, school, town, and world.

“The trip to these places in our community gives the children an interactive experience to see what happens at the fire house and police station,” said first grade teacher Mrs. Mackin.

At the police station, students were able to see the officers' work spaces, the fingerprinting room, a jail cell, as well as experience sitting in a real police car. At the fire station the students learned basic safety rules, practiced “stop, drop, and roll,” and also got to see the turnout gear, fire pole, fire trucks, and equipment.

“The children not only get to see how community workers help our Oak Knoll community, but how they help citizens in general, no matter where they live,” Mrs. Mackin said.
