Gas Main Break Shuts Summit Ave. to Traffic

Gas main break closes Summit Avenue between DeForest Avenue & Whitredge Avenue.

A gas main has been ruptured near the corner of Summit Avenue and Deforest Avenue, according to City officials. The Summit Fire Department is working with PSE&G to slow the leak, said Fire Chief Joseph Houck.The fire department is closely monitoring any accumulation of natural gas within buildings in the area of 137 Summit Ave. No injuries have been reported. While the fire department has responded to several recent gas main breaks in the past three months, Houk said this type of high pressure gas break is a rare occurrence in Summit. The city is urging residents to avoid the area of Summit Avenue between DeForest Avenue & Whitredge Avenue and plan alternate routes.Stay tuned to Patch for a full report on this incident.
