Summit Police Offer Free Gun Safety Locks

Police chief also offers information for those looking to get rid of old and unwanted weapons.

The Summit Police Department wants gun owners in the Hill City to keep their weapons safe. On Thursday, the department announced that it will give free gun safety locks to any resident who asks for one.

The department will distribute cable-style locks that are inexpensive, easy to use and effective at rendering weapons safe," said Police Chief Robert Weck.

“This is just another proactive approach the Summit Police Department is taking to promote and provide improved gun safety in our Summit homes,” he said, noting that the move is being made "to prevent unnecessary tragedies."

Those interested in obtaining a gun safety lock, no questions asked, must visit the Summit Police Dispatch Center in City Hall.

The chief added that those wishing to turn in unwanted firearms or ammunition should call 908-273-0051. An officer will come to pick up the items and submit them to be destroyed.
