Mayoral Candidate

Civic Experience:  Serving 2nd term as member of the Advisory Board, City of Summit Department of Community Service; Founding member of TryCan, a nonprofit organization promoting programs for special-needs children; recipient of 2011 Martin Luther King Keeper of the Dream Award from Shaping Summit Together; Union County Women of Excellence Award; Citizen of the Year Award, NJ Psychological Association.

Education:  MBA and MA- Communications from the Univ. of Texas at Austin, BBA - The George Washington University

Top Issue:  Keep Summit Affordable for young families and seniors, preserving our quality of life, by controlling taxes at the city, school AND county levels via strategic partnerships and shared services.  Focus on capital equipment and administrative cost savings.

Second Issue:  Return Summit’s Common Council to desperately needed respectful, responsive, transparent governance  that listens to, communicates with, and represents ALL stakeholders.  Increase communications and cooperation across Summit’s public, private and not-for-profit organizations.

Third Issue:  Support our already strong schools with a Professional Nonpartisan Board focused on efficiently delivering improved student performance across all levels of achievement.

Employment:  Director, Grants Management, Ford Foundation, overseeing compliance monitoring for $495 million in annual grant making in the US and 10 overseas countries.

Civic Experience:  Member of the Board of Education for 6 years and President in final year;  Trustee of Summit PEP Foundation;  active member of Isaiah House Homeless Ministry, Greater Union County Jack and Jill and Fountain Baptist Church;  recipient of 2009 Martin Luther King Keeper of the Dream Award; 2008 award by NJ YMCA Achievers Program.
 Education:   M.P.A.in Nonprofit Management, Seton Hall University; B.A. in Business Administration, University of Pittsburgh

Top Issue:  Insure smart fiscal planning through managing taxes, shared services and staying ahead of and dealing knowledgably with all aspects of Federal, State and County mandates.

Second Issue:  Protect Summit's key assets; our schools, downtown and seniors.

Third Issue:  Make civility and transparency the standard in governing Summit to insure effective and efficient outcomes.

Name:  Sandy Bloom  
Age:  65 years old

Employment:  Attorney in Washington, D.C. before moving to Summit

Civic Experience:  PTO President of Lincoln-Hubbard School;  Co-President
 of citywide PTA-PTO Presidents Council;   member of the Board of
 Education for 6 years and President in final year;   currently 6th
 year Zoning Board member;  former President,  Board of Trustees of Temple
 Sinai;  Steering Committee, Mayor's Forum on Valuing
 Diversity;  member 2006 Master Plan Reexamination; appointed by
 Republican and Democratic mayors and Council Presidents.

Education:  B.A. Sarah Lawrence College, J.D. Boston University Law School

Top Issue:  Bring a sharp, proactive focus to smart fiscal planning, fiscal restraint and reining in property tax increases through a thorough examination of all sectors of the budget;  seek cost savings through shared services that provide cost reductions with neighboring towns.

Second Issue:  Practicing good governance means that the culture of Common Council needs to demonstrate a higher standard of civility and collaboration, as well as being more responsive to the community's concerns.   

Third Issue:  Carefully examine the needs of Senior citizens in Summit, with the goal of making it possible for our Seniors to age in place.  A livable Summit for Seniors must focus on accessible transportation and better coordination among the institutions in towns that provide services for them.


Ward 2 Council Candidate

Name:  Dennis White

Age: 54

Employment:  President and CEO of a Fortune 50 corporate foundation; 10+ years of experience in firm’s Investment Department, originating private placement debt and structured finance transactions.

Civic Experience:  Commissioner, Summit Housing Authority;   8+ years as coach for Summit Soccer Club and Summit Recreation basketball; Volunteer for Summit High School forensic and theater activities;  Vice-Chair, Living Cities, Inc., nation’s largest community development collaborative.

Education:  B.A. Rutgers College; M.B.A. in Finance, Rutgers School of Graduate Management


Top Issue: Laser focus on the City’s fiscal issues and budget in order to keep taxes down and make Summit more affordable for seniors, empty-nesters and young families.

Second Issue: Continue to drive shared services across City departments and with neighboring towns in order to reduce City operating costs.

Third Issue:  Work to promote good governance and transparency across all City activities, boards, and departments.  Reestablish a culture of respect on the Common Council in order to attract the talented volunteers we need to effectively manage the city’s affairs.
