Benchmarks Discussed at Town Hall Meeting

Summit's benchmark standings were under discussion in a town hall-style meeting Thursday night.

Summit's benchmark standings was the main point under discussion in the fourth and final town hall-style meeting of the year Thursday night.

The meeting was attended by about 15 residents, including Common Council members, and Mayor Jordan Glatt.  Council President Dave Bomgaars opened the meeting, and then turned it over to former City Administrator Reagan Burkholder, now the Principal of Summit Collaborative Advisors, LLC.  Burkholder presented the results of a recent benchmark study comparing Summit to neighboring communities in budget category areas such as tax collection, garbage and trash, and code compliance, among others.

In general, Summit compared well to the other communities.

There was also a discussion about tax reassessments, brought up by Councilman Tom Getzendanner.  However, concerns were raised about tax burdens moving from struggling commercial taxpayers to residents.  Councilwoman Ellen Dickson was concerned about the impact of a reassessment on residents, citing an example in which a residence in another town saw its taxes doubled as a result of reassessment.

Also noted in the meeting: Ed Vant, current president of the Summit Taxpayers Association, was asked if a successor had been found in wake of his upcoming retirement.  Vant told the group that one had been chosen and would be named in the coming days.
