Eight Students Intern With City of Summit This Summer

Students will work in the departments of community programs, community services, public works and parking services, among others.

Eight students are interning with the City of Summit this summer.

According to the resolution approved by Summit Common Council on July 23, the following individuals will work on various projects in City Hall: 

Katharine Langstaff, Carnegie Mellon University Class of 2014, will working on a benchmarking and measurement project, and assist with the implementation of time and attendance for the Department of Community Services.

Samantha Kanter, a member of the Lafayette College Class of 2015, will work with the Department of Community Services. She will be working in communications and writing articles about the community garden, downtown planning survey, micro-surfacing, and primary elections. She will also write descriptions and edits for the smart phone application for the Art Tour of Summit, and will work on social media standardization and guidelines.

Lauren Nelson, a member of the Boston University Class of 2008, holds a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations and is a 5-year certified English as a Foreign Language teacher. Nelson, who has experience working in Spain and China, is currently working as the Department of Community Programs Summer Programs Coordinator and Environmental Intern for the Department of Community Services. Her key projects include involvement with the Environmental Commission, Farmers Market and Community Garden.

Timothy Schlenger, a member of the Brown University Class of 2016, is studying economics and political science. He will work with the Department of Community Services on grant applications, recertification for Sustainable Jersey, and updating the website and weather disaster preparedness materials.

Kevin Sekulic is attending Kutztown University to study finance and is set to graduate in 2014. He will be working with the Department of Public Works on time and attendance, and the work order system.

Katie Ramire, who is pursuing majors in Mathematics and Italian Studies with a minor in Physics at Dickinson College, will work with Parking Services this summer. Set to graduate in 2014, Ramire will be working to track and confirm account records between Parking Services and Finance relating to DeForest Lot Pay Stations.

“Specifically, I have been organizing the data we have concerning the money inserted and collected from the pay stations, then comparing this to both the money received from Finance, and our revenue,” Ramire says in the resolution.

Jeannine Wagenbach, a sophomore at Lafayette College who is set to graduate in 2016, will work with City Administration to update the City Clerk and Finance pages on the city’s website and update slides on the G-channel. 

Anthony DeLuca, who is studying Civil Engineering at Penn State University, will work with the Department of Community Services in Engineering. DeLuca, who is set to graduate in 2014, will work on AutoCAD drafting, inspections, filing, and day-to-day work. The AutoCAD projects may include creating potential design options for new projects and old plans.

Council members and those in attendance gave the interns a round of applause and wished them luck this summer.

“If you find out anything to improve Summit aside your working tasks, please let any of the council people or employees know,” said Council President Rich Madden. “We welcome your ideas.”

Councilman Tom Getzendenner credited Beth Kinney, Director of Community Services, for bringing the intern program back to Summit a few years ago and for continuing it this year.
