Mayor Glatt Endorses Coburn, Murphy

Candidates say mayor's endorsement could away undecided voters.

Mayor Jordan Glatt endorsed Steve Murphy for the At-Large seat, and Laura Graff Coburn for the Ward 2 seat on Summit’s Common Council Tuesday.

In a press release Glatt said of Murphy:

“Steve brings energy, commitment, an independent mind and a track record of extraordinary service to Summit to this election for Common Council.  ‘Putting community first’ is not just a campaign slogan for Steve, it’s a way of life—from his support of the First Aid Squad to his leadership on numerous projects benefiting youth, from his service as president of PAL to his fundraising for the Summit Educational Foundation and so many other worthy causes. With all this in mind, it’s clear to me that Steve is the right man at the right time to serve as Summit’s At-Large Councilman.”

Murphy said Glatt has been a "great friend" to him and to the residents of Summit.

"As a two-term mayor of our great city, and a wonderful voice for Summit, I am truly hunbled by Mayor Glatt’s endorsement," Murphy said. " Jordan is so well-respected in town for a whole host of reasons that I think his endorsement will really help with the elecorate. "

Of Murphy's running-mate Coburn, Glatt said:

“Laura’s track record—years of involvement with Summit projects large and small on behalf of children and families, extraordinary support of our public schools, hands-on experience with the problems and the promise of downtown Summit, and willingness to stand up for what she believes—makes the choice clear.  Laura will work in a bipartisan manner, she will work with me on those issues that matter most to Summit, and she will always ‘put community first.’  Summit needs Laura on Council to pursue an active, positive agenda at a critical time for our community. “

Coburn said she agreed Glatt's endorsement will benefit the democratic candidates.

"He was elected by people on both sides," she said. "A lot of those people that might be voting a party line, might think otherwise because a mayor they voted for and like is endorsing us. So maybe they’ll cross the line for us, too.
