Recycling Center Ready to Compost Your Pumpkin

Discard pumpkins starting Friday through Nov. 30.

The City of Summit Recycling Advisory Committee is asking residents to compost pumpkins this fall.

Residents can bring pumpkins they are ready to discard to the Recycling Center at the Transfer Station starting Friday through Saturday, Nov. 30 to deposit in a special collection area designated for pumpkins only. Pumpkins may also be placed in brown, biodegradable leaf bags for curbside collection along with their leaves.

“Keeping pumpkins out of the garbage is an important way to reduce household waste,” explained Paul Cascais, Superintendent of Public Works. “Pumpkins are also a great addition to compost piles, adding useful nutrients to the material.”
