Security Cameras Update Expected at Council Meeting

A Discussion, Action and Referral Item includes an update from Department of Community Services Director Beth Kinney.

The agenda for Wednesday night's common council meeting includes an update from Director of the Department of Community Services Beth Kinney regarding the installation of security cameras downtown.

Cameras have been a topic of discussion since the July homicide of Abelino Mazareigo in the Promenade Park but was recently brought to the forefront when a 9-year-old girl was injured in the alley behind the Tier Garage. It is suspected that teenagers tossed PVC piping off the top level of the garage.

Kinney said last month that she and Police Chief Robert Lucid have been working on a plan to install a network of security cameras downtown. The venture will be partially funded through a grant from Summit Downtown, Inc. But Kinney said the project will have to go out to bid and just as important as the cameras is the network to supply live feeds to the emergency response dispatchers and a computer network to store the digital files so they may be reviewed for evidence if needed.
