Board of Ed Agenda Meetings Start Tuesday

Dear Summit Schools Parents and Community Members,
A unique opportunity to participate in planning for the future of the Summit Public Schools is being offered by the Summit Board of Education.
Through an online survey and four community planning meetings – one of which will feature an inspiring and energizing presentation by nationally recognized author, speaker, and educational consultant Jamie Vollmer – the Summit community and school parents and staff can participate in planning the direction of Summit Schools.

Planning for the Future

Every three years the board, with input from the community, parents, and district staff, develops “focus areas” to serve as goals and guidance for the schools and for decisions made by the board and administrators.

The current focus areas expire in June 2012. Therefore, the board has scheduled a series of planning meetings to which all constituents are invited to assist in developing new focus areas that will guide the district through June 2015.

Three mid-week evening meetings and one Saturday meeting are planned. Participants are invited to attend one or more of the meetings:

The meetings will be facilitated by Gwen Thornton, New Jersey School Boards Association field representative. Each of the meetings will feature a brief opening state-of-the-district presentation by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Nathan Parker that will be followed by three sessions of break-out groups in which attendees can brainstorm and discuss the topics.

Spanish language break-out groups are planned for the November 21 meeting. Translation services will be provided by members of the Summit Schools staff.
At the December 10 meeting, input from the three prior meetings as well as from that day’s meeting will be synthesized and the focus areas decided upon. The meeting will open with an energizing presentation by Jamie Vollmer. Vollmer, who was received with great acclaim at the recent New Jersey School Boards Association’s annual convention, is a champion of public education and the author of Schools Cannot Do It Alone, in which he promotes community, business, and personal support for public schools in achieving student success. Current Focus Areas
Following are the current focus areas, which went into effect in September 2009 and expire in June 2012:
• Conduct a thorough assessment of existing programs and services; use data to determine effectiveness of programs; and to eliminate, modify, or add to programs as needed.
• Eliminate the achievement gap and raise academic achievement for all.
• Expand and focus on global education to incorporate interdisciplinary approaches across the curriculum to prepare students for 21st century challenges
• Create an environment in which the social and emotional development of each child is enhanced.

Estimado padres y miembros de la comunidad de las escuelas de Summit,
La Junta de Educación de Summit  esta ofreciendo un oportunidad única para participar en la planificación del futuro de las escuelas públicas de Summit.
A través de una encuesta vía Internet y cuatro reuniones de planificación en la comunidad - una de las cuales contará con una presentación inspiradora y excitante por el autor, conferencista, y consultor educativo, reconocido a nivel nacional, Jamie Vollmer - la comunidad de Summit, nuestros padres de familia, y el personal escolar pueden participar en la planificación de la dirección de las Escuelas de Summit.
Planificación del futuro
Cada tres años la Junta, con la participación de la comunidad, padres y personal del distrito, desarrolla "áreas de interés" para servir como objetivos y orientación para las escuelas y las decisiones tomadas por la Junta y los administradores.
Las áreas de enfoque actual caducan en junio del 2012. Por lo tanto, la Junta ha programado una serie de reuniones de planificación a la cual están invitados todos nuestros constituyentes para ayudar en el desarrollo de nuevas áreas de enfoque las cuales van guiar el distrito hasta junio del 2015. Se han previsto tres reuniones durante la semana y una reunión sabatina. Todos están invitados a asistir a cuantas reuniones quieran.

Las Áreas de Enfoque Actuales
Aquí siguen las áreas de interés actual, que están vigente desde septiembre del 2009 y caducan el junio del 2012:
•       Llevar a cabo una evaluación completa de los programas y servicios existentes; el uso de datos para determinar la efectividad de los programas; y para eliminar, modificar o añadir a los programas según sea necesario.
•       Eliminar la brecha en el rendimiento estudiantil y mejorar los logros académicos de todos.
•       Ampliar y enfocar en la educación global para incorporar estudios interdisciplinarios y de tal manera preparar a los estudiantes para los retos del siglo 21
•       Crear un entorno en el cual se mejora el desarrollo social y emocional de cada niño.
