Boys Soccer Defeats Voorhees 2-1 in OT

McKenna goal in OT helps Hilltoppers advance to semi-finals of NJSIAA Tournament.

An exciting overtime goal by senior Terry McKenna propelled the Summit boy's soccer team to the semi-final round of the NJSIAA Soccer Tournament with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Voorhees High School.

The Summit home crowd went home happy after watching a tough soccer game end with McKenna's winning goal and his teammates mobbing him on the field.

"There was a scramble in front of the net. I saw the ball, got my foot on it and kicked it in,"  said McKenna.

Summit head coach Chris Yager said, "I am very grateful for the win. This was a very physical game and despite our injuries, we played OK."

Voorhees proved to be a worthy opponent from the outset of the game. They scored the first goal on a breakaway at the 31 minute mark to take the lead 1-0.

The game went back and forth as both teams battled to get into position to score. Summit could not take advantage of several golden scoring opportunities but their defense, led by Matt Miller, Nolan Kasbar and Terry McKenna, kept Voorhees from scoring any more goals.

It looked like Luke Shehata, Ashley Healy or Alex Przedpelski might be first to score a goal for the Hilltoppers as they picked up the offensive effort and threatened to score on several occasions.

However, at the 19 minute mark, Przedpelski finally got free down the sidelines and managed to get off a great low shot to the right corner of the net to tie the score at 1-1.

Summit was energized by the goal and continued putting pressure on Voorhees on the offensive end.

In the second half, fouls and free kicks were the order of the day, but oddly no yellow cards were issued. A foul was called on James Burns and then minutes later Luke Shehata was knocked to the ground.

Voorhees threatened to score as well but could not put one in the net. A bit frustrated, a Voorhees player collided with Summit goalie Josh Rosen and tried to kick him. The referee only issued a verbal warning.

Back and forth the game went. At one point Yager could be heard urging his team on from the sidelines. Summit began putting the pressure on Voorhees just as the game ended tied 1-1 in regulation.

In overtime, Summit kept the pressure on Voorhees but missed two corner kicks and a free kick by Clayton Johnson went wide of the net. Voorhees had one more good scoring opportunity but Summit made a tough defensive play to kick the ball away.

Then, in stunning fashion, the ball found its way in front of the Voorhees goal and was batted around until McKenna got to the loose ball and drilled it into the open net, past a diving goalie, to give Summit a dramatic 2-1 win in overtime.

Summit advances to the semi-finals of the NJSIAA tournament to play the No. 1 seed Delaware Valley on Nov. 8 at 2 p.m. at Delaware Valley.
