District Cuts Basic Skills Staff

Superintendent Nathan Parker says the move will result in no job losses.

Summit schools will reduce the size of its basic skills instructional staff from 12 to seven for the 2011-12 school year. Superintendent Dr. Nathan Parker made the announcement at Thursday's Board of Education workshop meeting at the Wilson Primary Center.

Parker said the move is being made on the recommendation of the BOE Curriculum Committee in an effort to improve efficiency and to be in compliance with federal education guidelines.

Under the change, seven teachers will continue implementing the program in Summit's elementary schools: and schools
will share a basic skills teacher. will have one full-time basic
skills teacher, will have two full-timers and will
have three. The teachers' specific duties will be defined based on the
students' needs in each school.

Parker said the teachers being removed from the program will move into new roles.

"There will be no job losses here," he stated. "The teachers will be reassigned to special education and general education positions based on their skills and certification.

"Our goal here is to do more with less," he said. "It's a win-win. We'll improve program, and it's a growth opportunity for the teachers as well."

Parker this week sent a letter to local PTO and PTA presidents to inform
them of the program change.

The Board of Education's reorganization meeting is scheduled for Monday, May 16, at 7:30 p.m. in the Summit High School Library/Media Center. At this meeting, the board will seat new members and elect a new slate of officers.
