District to Offer Free, Reduced Breakfast at High School, Middle School

Students already eligible for the free or reduced lunch program will now be eligible for free or reduced breakfast at Summit High School and the Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School.

Board of Education member George Lucaci got the answer he was looking for at last week's Board of Education workshop meeting.

In an effort to attack the achievement gap from all angles, the district will now offer free or reduced breakfast at Summit High School and the Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School to those students who are already eligible for free or reduced lunch.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Nathan Parker said this is something already being done at Jefferson School and after talking with Pomptonian Food Service administrators determined this was something that could also be implemented at the high school and middle school. An a-la-carte breakfast is also already offered at both schools.

The idea is to offer students a healthy breakfast to start their school day. Lucaci said studies show that students who get a good breakfast do better in school.

"There's a lot of out of the box thinking on the achievement gap issue,"Lucaci said.

The addition of the high school and middle school in the National Breakfast Program is being made possible by a "significant profit" the district made last year by using Pomptonian  Food Service. The additional breakfast offering at these two schools will only add an extra hour of labor at both schools, Parker said.

Free or reduced breakfast should be available in about a month.
