Downtown Merchants Dish on Hot Back-to-School Supplies

From backpacks with wheels to pencils made from recycled newspapers, the shops of downtown Summit have your child–and you–covered this school year.

No need to go far from home for the kids' school supplies this year. Downtown Summit has the gear you need to start the new school year off right.

Local retailers such as CVS Pharmacy and Staples have what you need in terms of notebooks, pencils and paper, but some of the other stores in town have the items kids want.

The Luggage Center has a wide range of backpacks including Jansport, High Sierra and Kipling. The store carries backpacks of nylon, canvas or leather–with or without wheels–to ones that hold earphones, laptops and ipads. Owner Andy Jaffe said they have bags from $12 to $100 and the store is open seven days a week. Jaffe adds that not only do they sell bags but accessories as well, including zipper pulls and bag tags that come in various styles and colors.

Andrea Goldman, owner of Zoom, said that her store will have the latest in school supplies and accessories. She currently carries items such as Vera Bradley school supplies, rhinestone backpacks, backpack keychains, change purses and water bottles. In addition, her store has a section devoted just to locker décor.

Goldman adds that she also has fun socks and rainboots, trendy watches and many more accessories to make going back to school more fun.

The Toy Professor is also stocking items that kids are asking for this new school year. The popular things this year that owner Geoff Stern is selling are even environmentally-friendly. These items include Smencils, which are scented pencils made from 100 percent recycled newspapers and Wildkin backpacks, which come in a variety of unique patterns. Wildkin products are made with materials that are lead-safe, bpa-free and phthalate-free.
