Author Talk Tonight: Black Cowboy's Ride Across America by Lisa WInkler

The journey of a lifetime!

As a child, Miles Dean dreamed of being a cowboy. As a young man, he took riding lessons and eventually bought his own horse. At the age of 57, he took an unpaid leave of absence from his job as a Newark schoolteacher, setting off on a six-month, 5000-mile ride across America to celebrate the contributions African Americans made in the settling of the United States.

Journalist Lisa Winkler met Miles Dean when he had returned to teaching after his journey. She was fascinated by his accomplishment, and by aspects of American history that she had never learned in school. On the Trail of the Ancestors is based on her interviews with Dean and others. Copies of the book will be available for sale after the program.
