The Ethics Institute at Kent Place School Hosts a Workshop With Hastings Center Scholar

On Friday, December 2, The Ethics Institute at Kent Place School will host an ethics workshop in the Commons Room, Mabie House from 8:30-9:30 a.m. The workshop will feature Josephine Johnston, Director of Research Operation at The Hastings Center, a non-partisan bioethics research institute. The event is free and open to the public.

The topic for the discussion will be “Guilt on the Brain: What Can Neuro-images Tell Us About Criminal Minds?” The workshop will also serve as an introduction to bioethics and cover the key questions: “What is bioethics?” and “What are the goals of bioethics research?” The role of bioethicists will also be explained.

Johnston is a research scholar at The Hastings Center, located in Garrison, New York. She received degrees in law and bioethics from the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand. Johnston has worked on a range of ethical, legal and policy issues in stem cell research, genetics, biotechnology and medicine. Her current project involves the controversies surrounding the use of drugs in children with emotional and behavioral problems.

Since 1969, the Hastings Center has been a leader in research, education and policy recommendations on the ethical and social impact of advances in medicine, health care and biotechnology. The Center publishes two peer reviewed journals, Hastings Center Report and IRB: Ethics and Human Research, as well as the online commentary site: www.bioethicsforum.org.

The Ethics Institute at Kent Place School is a first-of-its-kind institute at the primary and secondary school levels, which believes that fostering ethical thinking and ethical decision-making in the youngest of children prepares them to be the most effective leaders and compassionate citizens of tomorrow.
