Girls Volleyball Beats Cinnaminson

First NJSIAA Tournament appearance for Hilltopper's since 1998

For the first time in 12 years, the Summit girl's volleyball team appeared in a NJSIAA tournament game and beat Cinnaminson High School 25-16, and 25-15.

"It feels great to win especially since the first one is the hardest," said Summit head coach Pedro Trevino. "We made a little history today."

Lindsay Leiter led the way for the Hilltoppers in the first game by serving three points in a row to put Summit on top 5-3.

After another run by Summit to make the score 8-3, Cinnaminson called a time out to regroup.

Several long volleys later, Summit weathered a few shots in the net and got back on track to lead 12-7.

Leiter also played big at the net and made two great blocks in a row to increase the Summit lead 19-10.

A flurry of good scoring serves by Kelli Houck and a kill by Leiter made the score 22-12. Nicole Johnson put an exclamation point on the first game by scoring a hard kill to give Summit the win 25-16.

Summit jumped to an 11-5 lead in the second match on several good plays by Nicole Johnson and Allie Wernsing. However, in a flash, Cinnaminson chopped the lead to 14-13 after Summit lost points on a couple of out-of-bounds calls and had some difficulty handling a few serves. Jeanelle Augustin stepped up to stop the slide by scoring a kill and giving Summit a lead of 15-13.

The Hilltopppers kept the run going with fine defensive blocks by Leiter and kills by Nicole Johnson to make the score 19-14. Summit went on to take the second game and the match 25-17.

"It was absolutely awesome to win today," said Allie Wernsing. "I am so proud of my teammates and it's great to play for a coach who works us hard but is also very supportive."

Summit, with a record of 14-8-0, will play Rahway in the second round of the NJSIAA tournament on Friday.
