Hilltopper Alumni Weekend Debuts This Fall

A new initiative to re-establish contact between the city and former Summit High students was announced at the April 28 Board of Education meeting.

wants former graduates who have lost touch with the Hill City to come back home. 

The first annual Hilltopper Alumni Weekend was announced Thursday night at the Board of Education meeting. The series of special events will take place Oct. 14-16. Its goal, according to organizers, is to restore connections between former Summit High students, the school system and the Hill City.

The weekend will include a host of activities. First up is an open house at the high school. There, alumni can enjoy a reception, a Hilltopper sporting event and guest lectures by distinguished graduates–Superintendent Dr. Nathan Parker called them "successful, glamorous people."

Also planned are an outing at the Municipal Golf Course, tours of the middle and high schools, a tailgate party catered by and student performances and exhibitions. On the final day of the weekend, alumni can enjoy a brunch at the and the 125th Anniversary 5K Run.

Summit High School Athletic Director Michael Sandor said that he hopes Hilltopper teams start off with winning seasons so that they will be able to play at home during the Alumni Weekend.

"I'm telling all my teams that they must win to get that home berth," he joked.

Peter Laughlin, who graduated from Summit High in 1975 and sits on the Alumni Weekend planning committee, said the project's goal is to reconnect people with the Summit community. 

"It's a way to showcase all that the school system, downtown, performing arts, and athletic events have to offer," he said. "We want to remind alumni of how great Summit is, so they'll come home."

Laughlin said the weekend offers great opportunities for class reunions. He noted that SHS 20th, 25th and 30th reunions are already in the works for Alumni Weekend.
