Kent Place Leadership Institute for Girls Holds Open House March 5

This unique program is designed to create and bolster the foundations for strong leadership, confidence, ethics and self-esteem.

The Girls' Leadership Institute (GLI) will hold an Open House on Tuesday, Mar. 5 from 7 to 8 p.m. for families interested in the program. Past participants will be in attendance to share their experiences with prospective girls, while program staff and counselors will be available to answer questions.  The Open House will be held in Atwood Hall in the Middle School on the Kent Place campus at 42 Norwood Ave. in Summit.

GLI, entering its 18th year at Kent Place, is an engaging and special experience for girls entering seventh or eighth grade. This unique program is designed to create and bolster the foundations for strong leadership, confidence, ethics and self-esteem.  Each girl is encouraged to explore her own style of leadership and strengthen her decision-making skills through an extensive program. The 10-day program takes place on the beautiful 26-acre campus of Kent Place School in Summit, NJ, from July 15 through July 26, 2013.

Participants will take part in a variety of activities, including a challenging ropes course, ethics workshops and relationship building with other young leaders. Community service and close interaction with high school and women community leaders are other important aspects of the two-week program.

“In middle school, girls really begin to find their voice and with it, a desire to shape the world around them,” said Erin Hennessy, co-director of the Girls’ Leadership Institute. “At GLI, we give them the tools to effect change in their schools, communities and even in their peer groups.”

Interim Co-director Carol Gordon continued, “With the world around middle school girls growing increasingly complex – think of social media alone – exposure to ethical thinking can provide a solid foundation for thoughtful decision-making.” Gordon added, “Our ethics workshops provide girls with the tools they need to determine what they truly believe in and to follow their own paths with confidence.”
