KPS Ready to Begin 2012 Spring Season

The Kent Place Dragon spring sports squads will begin their seasons at the beginning of next week.

Softball

The Dragons established themselves as a serious Valley Division Conference contender in 2010. Then in 2011 the Kent Place Softball team found themselves at the top of the mountain, recording a 12-0 conference record, which gave them their first conference title in school history, part of a 14-6 campaign.

With much of the 2011 team returning, Head Coach Jolyn Veres looks forward to another season competing for the conference title. The Dragons are returning three first team all conference players, Senior Jillian Nash, Junior Liza Kowalik, and Sophomore Kate Uhlman. As last year, Nash and Kowalik will once again be expected to lead the Dragon’s high powered offense.

Nash and Kowalik combined for 60 runs scored, 53 hits, and stellar .491 and .521 batting averages. The duo only struck out 10 times in over 100 at bats and each participated in 19 of the 20 games played last year. Uhlman anchored the team in the circle and tallied up 11 of the Dragons 14 wins as a freshman.

Returning with Nash, Kowalik, and Uhlman, will be Seniors Samantha Jakucionis, Nya Earrusso as well as sophomore, honorable mention player, Katharine Mulderry, who will finish rounding out the infield. Juniors Victoria Taylor and Tori Murphy, both veteran performers  also return for another year of play.

The Dragons will hope to see contributions from junior pitcher Caroline McDermott on the mound, as well as offensive aid from fleet-footed sophomore, Hannah Ferguson. Pitching was a major strength for the Dragons in 2011 and figures to be, again, in 2012. Kent Place will look to Uhlman, McDermott, and two new up and coming freshmen pitchers, Jessica Li and Caroline Schiavo.

Coach Veres is confident that Kent Place will remain an offensive strength. Despite the fact that the Dragons graduated two prominent offensive forces, our returners as well as our newcomers will without a doubt keep our offense where it needs to be.

Other returners and newcomers also include, Ashley Shields, Jocelyn Rego, Isabelle Vicens, Isabelle Donatelli, Olivia Parker, Charlotte Cook, Maddy Warner, and Alexis Kim. 2012 appears as if it will be another successful campaign for the Dragons. With a talented crop of newcomers joining the proven veterans, Kent Place looks fit to best defend its Valley Division Conference title. And rounding out the coaching staff is veteran of 16 years, coach Bruce Rhinesmith and in her second season, coach Gina Roof.

Lacrosse

The 2012 Dragons lacrosse squad will be led by Liz Gully and Allison Hislop. Both are expected to be strong leaders and contributors. Liz's strength on the defensive end and presence in the midfield will be important for us. KPS also has a very impressive junior class, as Anna Dougherty's speed will be tough to deal with for opponents, and Lauren Oberlander's field sense will be a big asset to the team.
