Athlete of the Week: Liam McLaughlin

Hockey player leads Hilltoppers to 4-game win streak. Visits Randolph at 5:30 p.m. and travels to Scotch-Plains Fanwood Sunday for 6:40 p.m. face off.

After dropping two straight games (one to close out the year and one to start the new year), the team needed a spark.

They received one, from Athlete of the Week, sophomore Liam McLaughlin. This is McLaughlin's second time being recognized as an AotW.

The 5-5, 130-pound forward has tallied six goals and five assists during the team's current four-game win streak, highlighted by a hat trick performance with an assist in an 8-2 home to start the streak.

During the streak, Summit has outscored its opponents, 30-7.

"Liam is the epitome of the phrase: "If you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life," said Summit head coach Keith Nixon, who has been at the helm for 18 seasons. "Liam loves to play hockey and works extremely hard in practice to get better, always with a smile on his face. Liam leads by example and has great vision and creativity on the ice. He does whatever it takes to win."

Currently, McLaughlin is the team leader in points with 26 (six goals, 18 assists), four ahead of senior defenseman Mike Nyitray.

Summit (9-2-1), currently two points behind Westfield for first place in the Union County Ice Hockey League, visits Randolph later today at 5:30 p.m. and faces Scotch Plains-Fanwood on the road Sunday at 6:40 p.m.

Tuesday, Summit defeated Westfield at home, 8-3, as McLaughlin had two assists.
