Lincoln Students Learn With Legos

Summit second-graders learned teamwork and communication skills while having fun with Legos.

The second grade teachers at Lincoln-Hubbard, Miss Yendrick, Mrs. Emerson and Mrs. Egan, received a grant from the SEF to bring the Lego Education Simple Machine Set into the classroom. The second graders are able to pilot the first round of this program this spring.

The Simple Machines Set is perfect for introducing the classes to key building concepts through teamwork and communication skills. It features a series of 16 principle activities, four main activities, and four hands-on activities that will develop the students' understanding of basic physical science concepts such as gears, pulleys, levers, and wheels and axles through observation, reasoning, prediction, and critical thinking.

This program enhances learning by enabling students to refine and assess their thinking as they communicate with each other, compare models, and explore real-world connections. The problem-solving aspect of these kits allows students to think about a real-world situation and bring what they are learning to life. It is also a way to involve students in exploration and ongoing discussion of scientific models, which according to the national standards, is a topic to be explored across grade levels from elementary through high school.
