Meet Summit High School's National Merit Scholars

Graduating seniors William Brenn and Timothy Schlenger got their academic starts in Summit Public Schools.

A pair of Summit High School seniors were named finalists in the 2012 Merit Scholarship competition recently. Student-athletes William Brenn, a state-ranked hockey player and Timothy Schlenger, a track standout, are both the products of Summit elementary schools. 

Here's a little more about them:

Brenn, a captain of the hockey team is also a captain of this year's baseball team. He received the Hobey Baker Award, was named to First Team All County, Second Team All Area, and third Team All State Public Awards. He helped his hockey team win the Cron Tournament, County Cup, League Title, and .

He was honored by the World Languages Department for his achievements in Latin and was inducted into the department's Circle of Honor. 

Brenn credits the great teachers and challenging classes he has had in Summit for much of his success. In fact, he acknowledges Aaron Gilbert, his 5th grade teacher at as his inspiration to study engineering at Case Western Reserve University, which he will begin in the fall.

Schlenger is an alumnus of and headed to Brown University in the fall to study political science or international affairs. He was named an AP Scholar With Honors, and has been a magna cum laude student at the high school since freshman year.

Along with his academic achievements, Tim holds four school records in track and is the captain of the track team. Since freshman year, Tim has volunteered with the TryCAN peer mentoring program that provides learning and recreational activities to autistic children.
