Oak Knoll Soccer- Royal Roundup Oct 9-16

A look back at the past week for the Oak Knoll Royals soccer team at all levels.

Varsity soccer had a tough week, dropping both their games, both in overtime. On Thursday, the girls played unbeaten (and the # 1 ranked team in NJ in Group 1)  New Providence (10 – 0 – 1 record) and lost a nail biter, 4 -3 in OT.  The scoring came from Ginny Whitman ’13, Lizzie Armstrong ’14, Emma D’Arpino ’15 (goal for each) and Stephanie Ford ’14 (assist).  Goalkeeper Deirdre Walsh had 9 saves in the game.  On Saturday, the girls hosted cross town rival Kent Place School (9-2-1) in the second round of the Union County Tournament and dropped a heartbreaker.  Tied after regulation at 1 – 1, the teams played scoreless through two overtimes, then Kent Place prevailed on penalty kicks (4-2). Scoring the lone goal was Allison Kopacz ’13 and Deirdre Walsh contributed 5 saves in net.  The team record now stands at 7 – 5 and the team looks to get back on the winning track this week by hosting the always tough Rahway and Elizabeth teams.

The JV soccer team opened the week on Tuesday by blanking Plainfield 4-0 for their 5th straight win. Leading the way was Lizzie Gregory ’14 with a goal and an assist, as well as Sarah Kelly ’14 (goal), Ginny O’Connor ’15 (goal) and Maddy Lyons ’15 (goal).   Cate Chambers ’13 continued her strong play in goal by posting her 8th shutout of the season.  On Thursday, the girls travelled to New Providence trying to avenge an earlier 1-0 loss to them.  After playing to a scoreless tie through regulation, then through two overtimes, the team lost a cliffhanger 1 – 0 on penalty kicks.  The team record now stands at 7 – 3 – 1 and will look to get back on their winning ways this week.

The 7th and 8th Grade girls soccer team only played one game this week (due to rainouts) and handed Madison a 7 -1 thrashing on Thursday. The offensive firepower came from Cassie Ford ’16 (3 goals, 2 assists), Kate Kelly ’16 (2 G, 2A),  Emily McCarthy ’16 (first goal of season), Kitty Korth ’16 (also first goal of season) and Catherine Dunn ’17 (assist).  The goal tending duties were handled beautifully by Maggie Miszkiewicz ’16  and Grace Mullery ’16, both of whom contributed some all world saves!   The team record now stands at 2 – 2 and the girls will travel to take on the always dangerous William Annin Middle School team on Monday.
