Royals Weekly Soccer Roundup

A look back at the week that was for the Oak Knoll soccer program.

FOR THE WEEK ENDING SATURDAY, OCTOBER 22, 2011

Varsity Soccer had a nice bounce back week with two impressive wins and have now raised their record to 9–5 for the season. On Tuesday, the girls beat a talented Rahway team 4–1. Goals scorers were Allison Kopacz ’13, Ginny Whitman ’13, Stephanie Ford ’14 and Emma D’Arpino ’15. Cate Chambers ’13 and Deirdre Walsh ‘13 shared the goalkeeping duties and each contributed some nice saves.

The girls also welcomed back Kerri Caulfield ’13 who had been out over a month with an injured ankle and Kerri contributed nicely. On Friday, the girls handed out a Royal rumble on Elizabeth, beating them by a 9–0 score. Cate Chambers ’13 was solid in goal with some terrific saves and the defense was superb throughout.

Leading the way on the defensive front were Maddie Smith ’12,  Paige Tralka ’13, Kerri Caulfield ’13, Taylor Ford ’14, Sabrina Solow ’14 and Melissa Dunn ’15. Offensively, the girls got production from many players: Anna Vitton ’13 (2 goals, 1 assist), Paige Tralka ’13 (1g, 2a), Ginny Whitman ’13 (1g, 1a), Lizzie Armstrong ’14 (2g), and one goal each from Stephanie Ford ’14, Caroline Doherty ’14 and Sabrina Solow ‘15. Also contributing an assist each were Morgan Ryan ’15 and Emma D’Arpino ’15. 

The JV Soccer team got back to their winning ways by blanking Rahway on Tuesday by a 7–0 score.  New goalkeepers Keegan Kelly ’14 and Maddy Lyons  ’15 stepped right in and posted the shutout for the Royals. When it was all said and done, the girls played to a 0–0 tie and it was the 10th straight shutout for the girls, 11th for the season. The team has not given up a regulation goal since playing Pingry way back on September 17. The team record now stands at 8–3–2 and the girls look to close out their season against a rugged Union Catholic squad this week.

The 7th and 8th Grade Girls Soccer travelled to take on the always dangerous William Annin Middle School team on Monday and, playing very shorthanded once again, lost a tough one 3–0. On Thursday the girls played perennial contender Newark Academy and lost a heartbreaker 3–2. Goalkeeper Maggie Miszkiewicz ’16 was fabulous in goal making some spectacular saves to keep it close.  The team was led on the offensive end by Cassie Ford ’16 who contributed a goal and an assist, Gillian Lawlor ’17 (goal) and Emily McCarthy ’16 (assist). Defensively, the team got strong efforts from Jackie Grieco ’16, Katherine Branchina ’17 and Catherine Dunn ’17, as well as some nice hustle from Kitty Korth ’16, Kate Kelly ’16 and Grace Mullery

Their record now stands at 2–4 and the girls look to get back on the winning track this week against some of the top teams in the area:  Madison, Kent Place and Pingry.
