Sports Roundup: Girls Track Wins It Again, Boys Place Second

Both girls and boys teams have qualified to compete in the state's Group 2 Championship at the Bennett Center in Tom's River this Saturday, February 19.

The Summit girls winter track team had a resounding win at the NJSIAA State Sectionals last weekend bringing home their third gold at a major meet this season.  The girls team had recently placed first in the Union County Relays and the Union County - Individual competitions.

There were many impressive performances. Once again the team was led by senior captain, Katie Watson who had triple wins running  5:02:11 in the 1,600 meter, 2:18.23 for the 800 meter and an amazing 59.7 as the anchor for the 4x400 relay team. All Watson's times were meet records and personal bests.  Daria Chadwick had a double win in the high jump reaching 5' 2" and running 8.75 for the hurdles.  In the 800 meter race Rebecca Cummings and Bridget O'Brien followed closely behind Watson's first place,  with second (2:18.59) and third place (2:21.57) finishes.  Both were also on the winning 4x400 meter relay team.  Isabella Yozzi was third in the 1,600 meter race with a 5:19.48. Aleixa Diaz placed second in the high hurdles (8.78) and fourth in the 400 meter race.

The boys term placed second at their State Sectionals meet with excellent performances by Mark Jones who won both the high jump (6' 4") and the 55 meter hurdles (7.81) and Thomas Chin who placed third in the 1,600 meter ( 4:34.71) and 3,200 meter (10:16.43) races.  The 4x400 meter relay team came second.  Andrew Mandelbaum, Jesse Taylor and Griffin Cooper contributed to Summit's point total with strong performances in their distance racing events.
