Summit Sports Week in Review – Sept. 12-18, 2011

Varsity football improves their record to 2-0.

Varsity Football

Last Friday, Varsity Football won 31-28 over Warren Hills.  Current Record: 2-0

The JV Football team won its opening game on Monday 15-12 over Voorhees. Matt Oristanio took the go ahead touchdown over the line with just .36 seconds left in regulation. Colm Dougherty scored the other touchdown for the Hilltoppers. Aaron Davis led a stifling Hilltopper defense that held the Vikings in check for most of the game.  Current Record: 1-0

On Friday, Freshman Football won 40-0 over Warren Hills.  Current Record: 2-0

Boys V/JV Cross Country

The team defeated Rahway on Tuesday in the opening dual meet and had a very strong showing Saturday at the Magee Invitational finishing 6th overall out of 42 teams.  Of the 20 juniors and seniors who have run the course previously, 19 turned in personal bests!

Freshmen Hilltopper freshmen enjoyed an outstanding Saturday at the Magee Invitational as they were crowned the overall champions of their division. It was the first time the team has won this Invitational, which draws nearly 50 teams from the state. Four freshmen - Leland Jones #2, Patrick Murray #4, Mitchell Booth #7, and Ryan Blume #11 - posted times that rank on the Hilltopper Freshmen all-time list.

Girls V/JV Cross Country

The lady harriers of Summit competed in a dual meet versus Rahway on Tuesday and the Bernie Magee Memorial Class Meet on Saturday.

The girls won the dual meet against Rahway.  The team has not lost a dual meet going on three years.

The girls competed in the 32nd Annual Magee Memorial Invitational at Warinanco Park.  The team placed 2nd in team overall team standings (average times from 10th, 11th and 12th grade races).  The 10th, 11th and 12th grade races were 3.25 miles.  The freshmen race was 2.25 miles.

The seniors, led by Isabella Yozzi’s (3rd  place) 20:10 and Maggie MacDonald’s (5th place) 20:18 helped the team to place 2nd in their race. 

The juniors, led by Devin Lawler’s (8th place) 21:03 and Emma Olcott’s (9th place) 21:07 helped the team to place 2nd in their race.

The sophomores, led by Gillian McIlroy’s (2nd place) 20:14 and Anna Baumeister’s (10th place) 21:26  helped the team to place 6th in their race.

The freshmen, led by Amanda Brodow’s (10th place) 14:50 and Emily Chin’s (11th place) 14:54 helped them to a fourth place team finish.

It was truly a great day to be a Hilltopper!

Girls Varsity Field Hockey

The Varsity Field Hockey team had a great week winning three games.  We beat Glen Ridge 4-1 on Tuesday.  On Thursday, we traveled to Millburn where we came back to win the game 3-1.  We finished the week off on Friday defeating Mt. Saint Dominic 8-0.  The girls played well as a team and are really starting to work together.  Their hard work is paying off.

Girls JV Field Hockey

Girls JV Field Hockey played two games this week.  On Tuesday, we won 3-0 against Glen Ridge and on Thursday we won 2-1 against Millburn.  Our record is no 3-0-0.

Girls Freshman Field Hockey

The girls freshman field hockey team faced off against Millburn on Thursday. They defeated them 1-0 with a goal from Kendall Codey. Emily Vlass had the assist. Alex Pohl record her second shut out.

Kendall Codey and  Kim Enriques did nice jobs controlling the midfield. The girls played a great game and are looking forward to continuing their winning streak.

Girls Middle School Field Hockey

The 8th graders comprised the Middle School Field Hockey team that recorded two wins last week.  Nine goals were scored by 7 different players (Catherine Cordrey (2) Kate Mennig, Claire Fitzpatrick, Sarah Elia, Brooke Daney (2), Allison Daney and Hillary Fryburg) lifting the team past Kumpf Middle School and the NJ

Strikers of Berkeley Heights. The center midfield players Allison Daney and Alex McDonald controlled the ball distribution. Excellent goal tending by Julie Wolshin and good defensive play by Julia Sanyor, Hillary Fryburg, Callyn Cass and Christina Bonnet allowed no goals against the Summit team.  At practice on Friday, we broke into squads. The Black/White game squad will travel to West Essex on Tuesday while

the Maroon/Gold squad will play away at Cranford  on Wednesday. The official MS Field Hockey Team T-shirts  were distributed on Friday and we would to especially like to thank Mr. Sandor for them!!!!!

Boys Varsity Soccer

The Boys Varsity Soccer Team won game two of the season by defeating in-town rival Oratory Prep 4-0, the team looked strong and built momentum heading into Thursday night's clash with Union Catholic.  The team came out strong scoring two in the first half and held on for the 2-0 victory. Saturday morning was a test against Ferris High School of Jersey City, and the team was frazzled in the first half, letting in 2 early goals.  However, with determination and solid play the team rebounded and scored two goals in regulation to level the score at 2-2.  It was a dramatic overtime winner with 4 minutes remaining that gave the Hilltoppers the 3-2 victory.  The team is currently 4-0 heading to Johnson tomorrow afternoon and hosting Cranford Thursday night 7:00pm at the high school.

Boys JV Soccer

The JV Boys Soccer team played 2 games this week beating Oratory Prep 4-0 and Union Catholic 6-0.  We improved our record to 3-0.

Girls Varsity Soccer

The varsity team lost 2 games this past week. 1-0 vs. Cranford at home and 4-1 vs. Gov Livingston away. Kate Martino scored the lone goal for Summit this past week. Current record is 1-2.

Girls JV Soccer

Summit girls had a difficult week last week.  We played Cranford at home and lost 3-1.  Our second half was much better than our first half, with a lot more energy and enthusiasm.  We also played Governor Livingston away and lost 2-0.  We have had a difficult week, but we look forward to getting past it and playing Westfield and Oak Knoll this week. 

Girls Freshman Soccer

The freshman soccer team had a tough start to the season losing to both Cranford and Governor Livingston. The girls are looking for redemption in their two games this week against Westfield on Tuesday and Bernards on Friday. Record: 0-2

Girls Varsity Tennis

Girls Varsity Tennis opened this week with two wins and one loss. They defeated Plainfield and Union, while dropping a tough loss to Kent Place.  Leading the way for the varsity squad were captains Emma Radest, Julia Shaffer,and co-captain Tasha Kewalramani. Lisa Carlson and Heather Pearson provided two wins for the team, and the second doubles, Kristen Miller, and Ryan Freeman remain undefeated at 3-0.

Girls Varsity Volleyball

The Lady Hilltoppers beat Linden (2-0), Plainfield (2-0) and rival Rahway (2-1).

They will play at Oak Knoll (20 Sep), at Kent Place (21 Sep) and at ALJ (22 Sep).

Girls JV Volleyball

JV girls volleyball went 2-1 this past week with victories over Linden (2-1) and Plainfield (2-1).  The loss was against Rahway (0-2).
