4X100 Girls Relay Team Sets New Summit High Record at Penn Relays

Plus: Mark Jones sets state record in long jump at Union County Relays.

Top high school teams from across the country traveled to Philidelphia, Pa. to face-off in one the the most prestigious competitions of the season April 28: the Penn Relays. 

The Hilltoppers No. 13 seed distance medley team of Isabella Yozzi, Rebecca Cummings, Bridget O'Brien and Katie Watson placed eighth in the country.  Katie Watson ran the 1,600 meter anchor with a time of 5:01.79, the sixth fastest anchor of the day. The 4 x 100 relay team of Daria Chadwick, Hallie Burke, Lauren Ng and Aleixa Diaz raced with the best and set a new Summit High school record.  Aleixa Diaz, Hallie Burke, later joined teammates Kirsty Gargiulo and Chelsea Taylor to race in the 4 x 400 relay.

The Summit Hilltoppers continued their outstanding performance the following week at the Union County relays. The girls placing third overall, setting new school and meet records. The 4 x 800 meter relay team of Rebecca Cummings, Isabella Yozzi, Kirsty Gargiulo and Katie Watson won the gold in resounding fashion setting a new meet record of 9:27.  The 4x100 relay of Daria Chadwick, Hallie Burke, Aleixa Diaz and Lauren Ng broke the Summit school record for the second time in one week and won the bronze. The same foursome competed in the 4x200 setting another new Summit school record.  Hallie Burke and Daria Chadwick later teamed up with Katie Watson and Rebecca Cummings to place first in the Sprint Medley Relay.  The distance medley relay team of Isabella Yozzi, Kirsty Gargiulo, Chelsea Taylor and Gillian McIrroy won the gold.   Isabella Yozzi, Gillian McIlroy and Kirsty Gargiulo and Emily Richards placed first in the 4x1600 relay.  The shuttle hurdles team of Daria Chadwick, Aleixa Diaz, Kelly Doaz and Lauren Ng set a new Summit High record.

Mark Jones led the way for the Hilltoppers boys squad setting a New Jersey best long jump of over 23 feet. Jones and teammates Donny Nelson, Kyle Fitts and Andrew Masterfano placed third. On day two of the Counties, Jones had a meet best clearance at 6’8’’ in the high jump and lead teammate Kyle Fitts to a silver medal.  The distance medley relay team of Thomas Chin, Jesse Taylor, Andrew Mandelbaum and Ryan Schreck placed fourth narrowly missing the Summit high school record.
