Boys Lacrosse Remains Undefeated

Hilltoppers crush New Providence in 15-1 victory.

SUMMIT–The Summit boys lacrosse team improved their undefeated record to 10-0 with a convincing 15-1 win over New Providence on a rainy Monday afternoon.

"We did a great job today," Summit head coach Jim Davidson said. "We got all the way through our roster, and our kids did a nice job on both offense and defense."

Although rainy weather conditions resulted in a few early turnovers by both teams, the downpour did not deter the Hilltoppers from their mission. Just under three minutes into the game, Summit's Tim Yager scored from the left wing to put the Hilltoppers on the board. In typical fashion, Hilltopper Danny Feeney won the following face off to give his team possession. Just 40 seconds after Yager's goal, Nolan Prinzen found Nick Kilkowski for the score. Summit's Marcel Godino scored one minute later to give Summit a 3-0 lead at the 7:18 mark.

Hilltopper Johnny Scioscia had a hand in Summit's next three goals, delivering a perfect assist to Kilkowski, and two to Michael Ford, to put Summit ahead 6-1 at the end of the first quarter. New Providence's only goal of the game came at the 5:46 mark in the opening quarter when Vinny Fuschetto scored on a broken play.

Summit slowed their pace a bit in the second quarter but were still able to find the back of the net at will. After a long series of passes, Terry McKenna found a cutting Ford for the score with 9:41 remaining in the half. Less than a minute later, the Hilltoppers executed a play perfectly when Kilkowski found Jake Hall for the score. Summit now led 8-1.

Before the end of the half, Summit's Nick Kitsos and Marcel Godino were able to find the back of the net to give their team a 10-1 lead at the half. Hilltopper Johnny Scioscia had four assists, and his teammate, Michael Ford, had three goals after just two quarters of play.

The third and fourth quarters were more of the same: either Danny Feeney or Michael Tsiang won the face off, the Hilltopper offense remained patient, and when it was time to score, they did. Third quarter goals by Sonny Round, James Gruetzmacher, Godino, Yager, and Kitsos gave the Hilltoppers a 15-1 lead.

"We played well today," Nick Kitsos said. "We came out, listened to coach, and executed our offense well."

Two fourth quarter saves by Hilltopper goalie George Campbell held New Providence to just one goal on the rainy afternoon, and Summit won their 32nd consecutive game by a final score of 15-1.

Summit's Marcel Godino and Michael Ford each scored three goals on Monday afternoon. The two lead the Hilltoppers in goals scored so far this season, Godino with 21 and Ford with 19. Senior Johnny Scioscia leads Summit with 16 assists on the season, and Nick Kilkowski and Ford lead the team in points, each with 24.

After 10 games this season, senior Danny Feeney leads Summit in both ground balls (69) and face offs won (67). His brother, goalie Brian Feeney, has tallied 51 saves this season and allowed just 25 goals in 10 games.

Summit hosts Mendham on Wednesday at Metro Homes Field at 4 p.m. Summit defeated Mendham 6-3 in last year's Group II Semifinals. Although Mendham has a record of 3-6 this year, the team was able to knock off Chatham last week in overtime, 7-6.

"Mendham has had a couple big wins this season, so in practice tomorrow we'll have to work hard and get ready for them," Kitsos said.
