Boys Volleyball Team Raises More Than $1,000 at Car Wash

Parents, supporters and team members gathered at Summit High School for a car wash to raise money for the team's activities.

SUMMIT–In just its fourth season, the Summit boys volleyball team has made quite an impact. Having earned their third consecutive state playoff berth, the squad seems to improve with each passing year. With a record of 13-1 this season, the team has certainly earned the recognition and appreciation they deserve.

"It's been incredible to watch these boys," said Lucile Callahan, mother of the team's senior captain and top setter Joe Callahan. "We're all so happy for them. They've had a great season."

Parent support has been invaluable in keeping the Hilltoppers volleyball team on the court, as the team is currently self-funded. Next season, however, they will be partially funded. The financial support is a relief for the parents, coaches, and players, who have dedicated so much time into building the program for Summit High School.

"This is a self-funded team, but every year their record improves," Callahan said. "What they've accomplished in just four years is really amazing. The players work hard and take it very seriously. The coaches have done an outstanding job, and the parents have a great time working together."

From day one, it seemed as though the team's parents felt that despite the lack of funding, they had to do whatever was needed to keep Summit's volleyball program alive. They felt the team was capable of great things, both in the present and the future, and was also a positive extra-curricular activity for the players.

On Saturday morning at Summit High, the team and their parents joined together once again to hold a fundraising car wash. Cars lined up while parents sold custom-designed Summit boys volleyball t-shirts, as well as desserts for anyone with an early-morning sweet tooth.

The team raised more than $1,000 Saturday, said parent Lou Cafiero,

The team also held a practice on Saturday morning to prepare for the state tournament. Summit suffered its first and only loss of the season last week to Roselle Catholic, ending their 12-game winning streak.

"The one loss was a little devastating–for the players and the parents–but it happened at a good time because it will motivate them for the states," Callahan added.

No. 9 Summit faces No. 8 Lincoln in the first round of the NJSIAA state tournament this Tuesday at Lincoln High School in Jersey City.
