Girls Hockey Battles Injuries, Illness

Hilltoppers drop a hard-fought game against Greenwich.

Beleaguered with injuries and illness, the girls ice hockey team lost a hard fought battle with Greenwich High on Saturday.

Summit trailed after one period 1-0. Despite battling back midway through the second period, the Hilltoppers could not capitalize on scoring opportunities and trailed 3-1 after the second persion.

"Many players had to step up and play a larger role because of some big injuries," Head coach Matt Stanbro said. "Two of our top forwards are nursing arm injuries, and one of our top D was sick with the flu. We kept it close in the first two periods, but fell behind in the third."

Greenwich came away with a 6-1 win even though Summit outshot their opponent 20-19.  Stuart Humphrey scored the lone goal, which was assisted by Annabel Sangree. Defenseman, Anna Johnson had a strong game, creating many scoring opportunities.

"It was a tough game because we feel we played better than what the scoreboard said," Stanbro said. "On a positive note, we are happy that we're outshooting our opponents. We need to start converting on our opportunities."

Stanbro said the time will be working on passing during practice this week.

"We had trouble getting out of our own zone and that can't happen," he said. "It was a solid effort, and we have some positives to take away, but we will keep working hard, and come away with a victory soon. "
