Girls XC looks to defend UCC Championship

The Summit Girls Cross Country squad embarks on defending its Union County Championship starting today, with visions of accomplishing more.

Under coach Dave Field, who is in his sixth year at the helm, Summit opens its season vs. Rahway today at Warinanco State Park in Elizabeth at 4 p.m.

"We have high expectations this year," Field said.  "Our goals are to duplicate championships in the Union County Conference and county, while securing a state sectional title (its last-2008). "We are aiming to win the Group (2), but it will not be easy with Voorhees this year."

Field returns four seniors and six juniors back to the team this year.  

"Katie Watson, a senior, will lead our team.  She is extremely talented and is poised to break some of her records from previous years," Field said.  "She is hoping to run in the 19's (minutes in a 5K).  Sophomore Hannah Rose and Junior Isabella Yozzi both are running strong and should figure in some quality runs. The rest of the "initial varsity" will be sure to impress with excellent times, due to hard work over the summer and into the pre-season."
