Girls XC Sets New Bar at Shore Coaches Invitational

Hilltoppers ranked. No. 20 in the state after winning their races for third week in a row.

The varsity girls cross country team had the fifth fastest times on Saturday out of 149 schools and including the top 20 teams at the Shore Coaches Invitational.

"We had a very good day," Head coach Dave Field said.

For the second week in a row, the varsity and junior varsity squads won their races.  Varsity has won three weeks in a row and is currently ranked No. 20 in the state.

Katie Watson ran tough and helped lead the girls to victory once again.

"She continues to get stronger and her confidence is growing with each race," Field said. "Katie set a personal record by 50 seconds from her previous mark when she ran 21:08 at Group II Championships last year."

Isabella Yozzi is also on quite a nice run.  

"She is running very consistently and her efforts in practice are paying off," Field said.

Yozzi ran 21:41 last year at group II.  She improved by 40 seconds.

Hannah Rose improved by 57 seconds over last year's 21:34 at group II's.

"All three girls are really setting the tone for the rest of our team," Field said.

Rebecca Cummings and Kirsty Gargiulo are also improving on past performances. Cummings ran 23:39 last year at the Shore Coaches Invitational, improving by more than two minutes and 30 seconds and Gargiulo ran 22:58 last year at Shore, improving by close to two minutes.  

"These are all impressive feats," Field said.

Devin Lawler and Jenny Stabler also ran on Saturday.

"Our varsity seven are running very well and continue to improve with each race," Field said.
