Hilltopper Gymnasts Are Making Their Mark

Today, the team travels to top-20 ranked Scotch Plains.

Summit High School never had a Varsity Gymnastics team until this year.  In the first month of their season, this new team has already had tremendous success, and given the short amount of time the team has been in existence, it seems that this new Hilltopper program is doing what other Summit teams do-- they are figuring out how to win!  The team is now 2-2 against much more established teams in Union County, and will be facing 2 teams in the top 20 in the State during October.

Freshmen Noa Efron and Emily Donohue have already achieved individual scores that qualify them to compete in the NJSIAA Sectional Championships in November.  Noa will compete on Floor and Emily will compete on both beam and vault.  Senior, Co-Captain Callie DePhillips is within striking distance of Sectional scores for both bars and floor.  Other Varsity competitors, Senior Co-Captain Kendra Lerner, Senior Co-Captain Brittany Coburn and sophomore Naomi Schachter have all continued to improve their scores each meet.  Last Thursday, the team posted season-high scores on vault, beam and floor on their way to a 96.075-90.125 victory over Union High School.

This week the team will travel to top-20 ranked Scotch Plains on Tuesday October 9th.  They are hopeful that the strong competition will bring out the best in each athlete.  Later in the week, they compete away at Union Catholic HS.  The next home meet is against #4 ranked Westfield HS on Tuesday October 16th at 7pm.  The Hilltopper Gymnasts compete at the Connection for Women & Families at 79 Maple Street, Summit, NJ.  Meets are open to the public, and free of charge.  All are welcome.
