PHILADELPHIA—It was all Mark Jones show Saturday at the Penn Track Relays. Before the largest crowd in Penn Relays history, 54,310 people, Hilltopper Jones took second place in the high jump event.
It all come down to Jones and Oneil Sandiford of Paul Robeson High School in Brooklyn. Jones easily cleared opening height, 1.92m, on his first attempt. He cleared the next four heights on his first attempt as well. Jones just brushed the bar on his first attempt at 2.09m, but cleared it on the second attempt. By that time, the competition had been narrowed down to just two. The bar was raised to 2.12m. Sandiford cleared it on the first attempt, but Jones was unable to make it over the bar cleanly, taking second in the event.
Summit also competed in the boys 4x400m relay Saturday, taking 25th in the heat. The team of Matt Espy, Alex Grillo, Ben Raskin, Thomas Chin ran a time of 3:31.74. Raskin's leg of the race made up huge ground, and he pulled them out of the back of the group. Chin continued that strong performance and was able to bring Summit into ninth in their heat.
