NJSIAA Honors Union County Scholar-Athletes

Twelve student-athletes were awarded a total of $8,500 in college scholarships.

The New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association recently honored 12 Union County high school students as scholar-athletes, awarding them a total of $8,500 in college scholarships.

Since 1993, the NJSIAA has honored more than 5,800 New Jersey high school students and distributed more than $1 million in college scholarships through its scholar program. In 2013 alone, NJSIAA gave a total of $133,500 to more than 170 high school students throughout the state.

The honored Union County NJSIAA scholar-athletes are:

Abraham Clark High School – Johanna Jaramillo – Star Ledger - $500

Arthur L. Johnson High School – Michael Cieslak – Wilson - $1,000 

Elizabeth High School – Joe Romero – NJSCA - $1,000

Jonathan Dayton High School – Jared Clayton – ShopRite - $1,000

Linden High School – Zachary Modrak – NJ Assoc. of Former County Superintendents - $500

Mother Seton Regional High School – Danielle Pfleghaar – Investors Savings Bank - $500 

New Providence High School – Kelly Carroll – Morgan Stanley - $500 

Plainfield High School – Aslin Cabrera – Star Ledger - $500

Roselle Catholic High School – Daniella Prado – Parisi - $500

Saint Patrick High School – Darrian Collins – NJSCA - $1,000

Union Catholic Regional High School – Dara Maguire – DAANJ - The Robert Kanaby Scholarship - $500  

Westfield High School – Elizabeth Cusick – ShopRite - $1,000 

Honorees were chosen by the individual schools. The particular scholarships each received was awarded through random drawings. NJISAA officials say that while some scholarships are only available to students attending schools in specific counties or participating in specific sports, most are offered statewide to students in all sports.
