Sharks Set New Team Record for Most Wins

Summit defeats North Caldwell for their sixth win of the season.

SUMMIT–Summit Sharks head coach Ryan Hauptman received a nice 25th birthday present on Tuesday morning at the Summit Family Aquatic Center when his team won their sixth swim meet of the season, defeating North Caldwell 330-71. The Sharks enter their last regular season meet with a record of 6-1; six being the most wins the team has ever recorded in a single season.

"This is really exciting for us," Hauptman said. "Everyone did great today. I'm really proud of the team. If we continue to focus on what we've worked on in practice and come out strong tomorrow (at East Hanover), we should be able to end the regular season 7-1, which would be fantastic."

As they have so often this season, the Sharks got off to a great start on Tuesday, taking first place in 19 of the first 20 races.

"Starting strong is always important," Hauptman said. "We've really begun to focus on the early freestyle events because that seems to be our strength. When we can get an early lead and build confidence, it helps us a lot, especially with the younger swimmers."

It was clear early on that North Caldwell had far fewer swimmers during Tuesday's meet than in the two teams' previous meeting this season, which Summit won 223-183. In fact, there were a number of races on Tuesday morning that featured only Summit swimmers.

"They were definitely short a few swimmers today, which affected their overall score," Hauptman said. "When we faced them a couple weeks ago at North Caldwell, they had a much bigger team and the meet was pretty close."

The Sharks excelled at the end of Tuesday's meet, capturing first place in all seven relay races. Overall, Summit put together another solid performance and continued to show improvement.

"We have a ton of data to compare times from early in the season to now, and it's clear that we're improving," Hauptman said. "This was the first meet where we really began to see a big difference in the times."

Summit (6-1) travels to East Hanover tonight for their 6 p.m meet. The Sharks defeated East Hanover 230-193 last week.
