Summit Welcomes New Basketball Club

The Summit Basketball Club formed in conjunction with the Department of Community Programs(DCP) and will oversee, manage and staff the in-town league and travel program.

The following information was provided by the Summit Basketball Club.

To all Summit Basketball Families: In response to many requests and demands for a true city-wide basketball program in Summit, we have finally gathered together and put forth an organization that the sport and the city of Summit demand.  We have recently formed the Summit Basketball Club and in conjunction with the Department of Community Programs(DCP), will oversee, manage and staff both the In Town League and the new Travel Program.

We have formed a board of citizen basketball parents, coaches, High School coaches and representatives of the DCP.  The plan put forward by the Club and the DCP was approved unanimously by the DCP board last week.

We are actively working together to create a top notch organization that will offer all the basketball players in our city the finest basketball experience and the highest quality atmosphere to those committed to the sport. We will strive to not only maintain the In Town League, but improve upon it.  At the same time, we will launch the first city-wide travel program and provide it all the prerequisites to make it amongst the best in the state:  highest level of coaching, practice time consistent with our competition, contiguity with the Middle School and High School programs, year-round competition to those teams requesting it and fair, independent qualification of the players invited to participate.

The SBC Mission and details of both programs are below, but we will be remitting flyers to your homes and announcing the plans for Fall/Winter 2013 in local papers.  We will be having registrations in September and evaluations and tryouts in October.

Volunteers will be needed both in the formative stages and during the season, so if interested in joining the effort, please reach out.  Stay tuned because great things are to come!  If you should have any questions, please do not hesitate to email us.  Its an exciting time for basketball in Summit and we look forward to making it the best experience possible for all of our kids!

To provide the City of Summit, in partnership with the Department of Community Programs, a full range of basketball opportunities for all Summit residents from grades 3-8, including an In Town League from grades 3-8 and a Travel Program from grades 5-8. To offer all interested basketball players from 3rd through 8th grade a competitive yet educational environment to develop their basketball skills.  The In Town League will offer participants both practice time and clinics along with a competitive team-oriented season.  The Travel Program will offer 5th through 8th grade Summit basketball players with more highly developed skills the opportunity to play against higher level competition in a multi-town league.  The required practice and skill development demands for these players will be greater than those for the In Town League.  The level of commitment demanded from these players will also be higher-commensurate with the demands of the Travel Program.  Furthermore, the organization will be structured to seek and receive public donations and private sponsorships to enhance our efforts and to assist the DCP in developing additional basketball infrastructure.
